Bac Ninh: From industrial powerhouse to semiconductor hub

Updated: 07:05, 01/09/2026

BAC NINH - As an industrial powerhouse where electronics manufacturing accounts for more than 70% of industrial output and home to several world-leading companies and corporations, Bac Ninh is now shifting towards core technologies, with ambitions to become a semiconductor hub in northern Vietnam and the country as a whole.

Previously, the former Bac Ninh and Bac Giang provinces leveraged their strong potential, advantages, tailored incentives and attractive business environments to become national models for investment attraction and industrial development.

Following their merger, the new Bac Ninh has gained greater combined strength, opening up broader development space and potential.

The province is expected to further accelerate its growth to become one of Vietnam’s major industrial and high-tech hubs, as well as a national semiconductor centre.

The province now has nearly 40 industrial parks that have received investment policy and investor approvals, with well-developed infrastructure for transport, power supply, water supply and drainage.

These industrial parks serve as important links to surrounding areas and the northern key economic triangle of Hanoi-Hai Phong-Quang Ninh, while providing strategic connectivity to seaports, border gates and international airports.

This gives Bac Ninh significant advantages in manufacturing, import-export activities and logistics.

With the mottos of “putting existing businesses at the centre” and “the success of businesses is the success of the province,” Bac Ninh has consistently worked alongside enterprises and created the most favourable conditions for investment and business activities.

In its first year following the merger, Bac Ninh ranked among the country’s leading localities in several key economic indicators, including GRDP size and growth, domestic and foreign direct investment, import-export turnover and the Provincial Competitiveness Index (PCI).

In particular, the province has continued to invest in and upgrade its industrial park system to meet the requirements of high-tech projects, providing a foundation for its qualitative transformation towards the core semiconductor industry.

Notably, Bac Ninh boasts an attractive industrial ecosystem, with thousands of FDI projects with total registered capital exceeding 50 billion USD, around 1,280 electrical and electronics companies, and 33 semiconductor and supporting-industry projects.

These are gradually helping establish the province as a semiconductor manufacturing and supply centre in Asia.

Many multinational companies and major corporations have chosen Bac Ninh as their destination.

They include Hana Micron Vina, with a project worth more than 600 million USD; Micro Commercial Components, with 90 million USD; Si Flex, with 299 million USD; and Victory Giant Technology, with a 800 million USD project to manufacture high-precision printed circuit boards.

Foxconn and Goertek, long-standing partners of Apple in Vietnam, are also increasing investment and adding new electronics and semiconductor factories in the province.

A prime example is Amkor, a US-headquartered global semiconductor manufacturing, assembly, packaging and testing firm. It began building its Amkor Technology Vietnam factory in Yen Phong II-C Industrial Park in 2021.

With investment capital of 1.6 billion USD, the facility has created thousands of high-paying jobs and is continuing to expand production capacity to 3.6 billion products a year.

Looking ahead, the company expects its Bac Ninh facility to become a major production base in Asia and a research and development (R&D) centre for new products, helping Vietnam integrate more deeply into the global semiconductor supply chain.

Amkor Technology Vietnam CEO Kim Sung Hun has repeatedly praised the provincial authorities for their support and partnership throughout the company’s investment and business operations.

He said the company plans to expand production and make further contributions to Bac Ninh’s high-tech development.

These impressive figures and developments not only underscore the attractiveness of Bac Ninh’s investment environment but also provide a solid foundation for the province to strengthen its position as an industrial powerhouse and move towards becoming Vietnam’s semiconductor hub.
