Updated: 14:04, 04/07/2024

The Saigon Professional Chef Guilds, which has represented Vietnam to compete in the 2024 Penang Culinary Competition in Malaysia (a prestigious award for Asian chefs), won two continental championship cups and set a record for the number of prizes in international culinary competitions to date, announced by the Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Association, on July 2.

The contest was held in Malaysia from June 27-29, gathering 1,200 contestants from more than 20 countries.

Vietnamese chefs have been increasingly affirming their capabilities in international culinary competitions.

Tran Thi Hien Minh, Vice President of the Saigon Professional Chef Guilds, stated that the Vietnamese chefs participating in the 2024 Asian Culinary Competition in Penang, won numerous prestigious awards for Vietnam.

Specifically, 40 chefs won 60 awards, including 18 gold medals, 26 silver medals, and 24 bronze medals, with two team prizes and two individual prizes.

In the traditional dish category, Nguyen Thi My Phuong, a member of the Saigon Professional Chef Guilds, won the gold medal.

Meanwhile, Nguyen Chanh Than, Head of the Vegetarian Chefs Club under the Saigon Professional Chef Guilds, shared that his team won the prestigious Asian Culinary Championship Cup, in the Chinese cuisine category.

According to Than, his team worked five hours to complete this competition, making 10 dishes that blended Vietnamese and Chinese flavours.

In the category of Malaysian cuisine with European flavours, Tran Quoc Thinh and his team surpassed nine other teams from Asian countries and the host country Malaysia, to win the silver medal.

President of the Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Association, Nguyen Thi Khanh, said the competition and the achievements of the Vietnamese chefs serve as an opportunity to assert and promote Vietnamese cuisine to international friends.

This record number of prizes further asserts that Vietnamese chefs are now on par with chefs from other countries, and domestic and international diners also love Vietnamese cuisine, she added.
