A ceremony held on October 9 marked the official export of Vietnamese pomelos to Australia and Australian blueberries to Vietnam.

Vietnamese pomelos officially enter the Australian market.

Pomelo has become the eighth Vietnamese fruit permitted to enter the Australian market, following dragon fruit, mango, longan, rambutan, lychee, star apple, and passion fruit.

Meanwhile, blueberries are now the eighth Australian fruit allowed into Vietnam, after grapes, oranges, mandarins, cherries, peaches, nectarines, and plums.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Hoang Trung said the milestone reflects the trustful and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.

It also demonstrates their shared commitment to sustainable development for the benefit of farmers and consumers in both nations, in line with the strong and comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and Australia.

He noted that the official presence of Vietnamese pomelos in Australia underscores the growing reputation and integration capacity of Vietnam’s agricultural products.

At the same time, the entry of premium Australian blueberries into Vietnam will diversify consumer choices and pave the way for the development of a two-way, complementary supply chain between the two countries.

To ensure full compliance with Australia’s phytosanitary and food safety requirements for pomelo exports, the Plant Production and Protection Department will work with local specialised agencies to provide training, disseminate regulations, and guide the establishment and certification of growing areas and packing facilities for export.

Vietnamese fresh pomelos are now available in 14 countries and territories, including the US, the Republic of Korea, and New Zealand.

Vietnam is the world’s second-largest pomelo producer, with about 110,000 ha under cultivation and an annual output of over 1.2 million tonnes, mainly concentrated in the Mekong Delta, Red River Delta, and northern midland and mountainous regions.

The export value of fresh pomelos reached approximately 60 million USD in 2024.
