Bac Ninh: “Visa-free tours” through cross-border classes

Updated: 17:16, 09/10/2025

BAC NINH - With internet connection, every geographical distance seems to be narrowed, giving students new, lively and inspiring learning experiences. The “English without border” learning model at Han Thuyen High School (Vo Cuong ward, Bac Ninh province) opens up opportunities for students to exchange, talk and learn with international friends right at their classes.

In an exciting learning atmosphere of an online class guided by the dedicated English teacher Nguyen Thi Ha, Han Thuyen High School, the students of class 12A10 were connected to talk in English with students at Gia Phong Secondary School (Ninh Binh province) and SMAN 1 Jepara School (Indonesia) with the topic about Bac Ninh’s quan ho folk songs.

The “cross-border class” model inspires students and teachers at Han Thuyen High School.

The students introduced and presented the unique features of quan ho in English while the students and teachers in other venues exchanged their opinions confidently and fluently.

“I am very happy to attend this class where I have opportunities to know more friends from other countries, exchange culture, practice speaking English and improve my teamwork and presentation skills”, said Nguyen Gia Huy, a student of class 12A10.

“When I attended the Microsoft Worldwide Innovative Teachers Forum in 2021, I approached a special learning model that schools worldwide can connect to each other not only for English but also other subjects like mathematics, physics, chemistry, biography and history. It is developed by the teachers and totally free, which is distinct from online classes at training centers or private classes. I found it a good opportunity for my students to exchange, learn experience and get more confidence in communication”, said teacher Nguyen Thi Ha.

With high determination, teacher Ha figured it out by herself and learned from experienced teachers about the learning model through social networks, facebook, Vietnamese innovative teachers’ community and groups of Mystery skype/Skype in the classroom and Global learning.

Then, Ha gathered information, participated in the teacher networking and exchange groups in Vietnam and abroad and directly contacted with some foreign teachers to decide contents, topics and detailed plans for the connections.

The classes will be set up on virtual platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. Thanks to enthusiastic support from the international teacher’s community, colleagues and foreign friends, her cross-border classes have brought about more positive effects.

Through the “cross-border class” model, teacher Nguyen Thi Ha has taken her students on “visa-free tours” to several countries including Republic of Korea, Indonesia, Philippines, US, Singapore, India and Malaysia.

After such lessons, the students become more confident in communication when many of them can properly use online learning applications like Zoom and Google Meet to connect with international friends as global citizens.

The students are given opportunities not only to improve their English listening and speaking proficiency in real context but also to promote cultural exchange and approach diversified knowledge.

Besides, they can practice soft skills such as teamwork, self-motivated work, problem solving and critical thinking.

The students are able to apply modern technology in learning and become more confident in communicating in both English and Vietnamese.

This learning model shows that the lesson is no longer limited in classroom, but it has been expanded globally, giving opportunities for students to learn and interact directly with international friends.

“The “cross-border class” model is one of the highly evaluated initiatives and encouraged to expand. It is included in the series of activities to realise the project “Gradually making English the second language in schools” developed by the Ministry of Education and Training”, said Nguyen Nhu Hoc, Head of the High school Education Division under the Bac Ninh Department of Education and Training.
