Nearly 10 million users of MoMo Piggy Bank (Heo Dat MoMo) have generated resources for education, healthcare, social welfare and environmental projects through contributions as small as VND100-1,000 and everyday activities such as walking.

MoMo developed the initiative to integrate charitable giving into its digital platform. Activities on the app and everyday actions can be converted into Golden Pigs, which are then translated into resources for social projects.

According to MoMo, more than 9.6 million people have participated over seven years, accumulating more than eight billion steps. Total contributions have reached VND545 billion, including VND105 billion in cash and VND440 billion converted from Golden Pigs.

The model aggregates large numbers of small contributions and actions. MoMo acts as a platform connecting contributors with charitable funds and social organizations, while technology records donations, tracks fundraising and channels resources to individual projects.

The funds have helped build 275 permanent school sites, provide books for 168 libraries, construct 459 charity houses and 53 bridges, and support surgeries for 3,535 children and 12,525 scholarships for disadvantaged students. They have also funded the planting of 200,000 trees.

Over the past three years, MoMo has worked with local authorities and other organizations on the "Gop La Va Rung" (Contribute leaves to rebuild forests) initiative, which converts activities on the platform into resources for forest protection, restoration and biodiversity conservation.

Nguyen Xuan Tu, Executive Director of the Hope Foundation, said social projects do not necessarily have to begin with large donations, but need mechanisms that allow many people to participate and aggregate small contributions into tangible results.

"Technology is making it easier to give, but the highest value still comes from large numbers of people participating and sustaining that spirit of giving," Tu said.

She added that classrooms or libraries built from thousands of small contributions also represent a collective effort to address community needs.

To mark the seventh anniversary of MoMo Piggy Bank, MoMo is working with Dong Tay Barbershop and the Hope Foundation to raise VND1 billion to build a school in Dam Rong 2 Commune, Lam Dong Province.

From Sept. 14 to 30, the "Dap Heo Nhan Qua - Chung Tay Xay Truong" school construction program will offer vouchers and digital red envelopes worth up to VND8 billion in total. Each time a user successfully breaks their virtual piggy bank, Dong Tay Barbershop will contribute an additional VND200.

After seven years, MoMo Piggy Bank has recorded nearly 10 million participants in 1,688 charitable campaigns, with 60 charitable fund partners. The programs have supported more than 1.1 million children and planted nearly 200,000 trees.

This year’s campaign focuses on key messages such as protecting children in the online environment, equipping them with safe digital skills, preventing violence, abuse, injuries and drowning, and enhancing the roles of families, schools and society.

 

Tet gifts provided for disaster-affected communities, vulnerable children

On February 4, the Vietnam Red Cross Society, in coordination with the Dak Lak provincial authorities, organised the programme “Tet for Flood-Affected Communities” in Tay Hoa commune. At the event, 1,000 Tet gift packages, worth 1 million VND (38 USD) each, were presented to poor households, policy beneficiary families facing hardship, victims of Agent Orange, elderly people living alone, persons with disabilities, those with serious illnesses, and families affected by storms and floods.
