Updated: 15:38, 09/09/2024

BAC GIANG - Typhoon Yagi, the third to hit Vietnam this year, has caused severe damage in several localities of Bac Giang province, with many constructions, factories, and roads destroyed; and large areas of rice and crops seeing reduced productivity.

In recent days, Party committees, authorities, armed forces, and residents have joined efforts to prevent and mitigate the effects of the storm, quickly addressing the aftermath and stabilizing production and daily life.

The provincial Party Chief Nguyen Van Gau inspects the field in Nam Duong commune (Luc Ngan district).

Following the Prime Minister's directions, Bac Giang province has implemented specific measures to respond to the typhoon. Before the storm made landfall, provincial leaders continuously inspected and directed agencies, units, and localities to strictly adhere to the "4 on-site" principle, and protect vulnerable dyke sections. Schools across the province were closed on September 7.

On the morning of September 8, the Chairperson of the provincial People's Committee issued an urgent telegram requesting emergency response to flooding in Son Dong and Luc Ngan districts.

Officials and soldiers from the Son Dong district Military Command and local residents are cleaning a street in An Chau town (Son Dong).

He instructed the People's Committees of the two districts to keep a close watch on flood developments and deploy forces to assist the relocation of residents to safe places.

They were urged to carry out emergency rescue and relief operations to ensure the safety of lives and property.

A provincial frontline command has been established in Chu town (Luc Ngan) to lead flood prevention and search-and-rescue operations in the districts.

Rising water levels make many homes in Chu town and Nam Duong commune (Luc Ngan) submerged.

In a spirit of mutual support and solidarity, local residents have been helping each other during this difficult time. Flooded households have been relocated to temporary shelters, and the injured have been promptly taken to medical facilities for care. At cultural houses and health stations where people take shelters, local authorities have provided drinking water, food, blankets, and other necessities.

According to the provincial Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue Command, by 4 pm on September 8, typhoon Yagi had claimed one life in Luc Ngan due to being swept away by floodwaters.

The storm resulted in the collapse of six houses, 1,953 unroofed houses, and emergency evacuation of nearly 1,500 households. Almost 15,000 hectares of rice, 485.7 hectares of vegetables, over 847 hectares of fruit trees, and more than 3,500 hectares of production forests were damaged.

Post-storm heavy rain also led to the erosion of 31 meters of canals, roof damage and wall collapse at 84 schools, three health stations, 12 cultural houses, and sports fields. Some spillways in Luc Ngan were washed out. The estimated damage is around 344 billion VND (13.97 million USD).

With a proactive and responsible approach, Bac Giang has effectively managed disaster prevention and mitigation efforts, helping to minimise human and property losses. In the coming days, all sectors and localities must remain vigilant and responsive to unusual weather patterns, swiftly restore production, and stabilize the lives of local residents.
