Of the graves exhumed, 1,608 yielded samples eligible for testing, while samples could not be collected from 452 cases in accordance with regulations.

Sampling of DNA from unidentified fallen soldiers is carried out scientifically and in accordance with regulations at Tan Dinh Martyrs' Cemetery.

A total of 1,318 samples have so far been handed over to the Military Forensic Institute for DNA testing and efforts to establish the identities of the fallen.

The work has been carried out under the “500-day-and-night campaign” and directions from Le Xuan Loi, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee and head of the provincial steering committee for the search, recovery and identification of war martyr remains.

Units involved have strictly followed the “six clear” principle, clear people, tasks, outputs, responsibilities, timelines and authority, while adhering to technical procedures from exhumation and sampling to the handover of specimens.

At the cemeteries, military forces and local authorities have closely coordinated the work, with localities preparing facilities and personnel and holding solemn incense-offering ceremonies before sampling.

Under the plan, the provincial steering committee will continue to mobilise resources through the end of September 2026 to complete DNA sampling, hand over specimens and digitise information on all 2,758 unidentified martyr graves at 215 cemeteries across the province.

The work is intended to help fulfil the wishes of martyrs’ families and the wider community.

Remains of 150 martyrs recovered at Le Thi Rieng Park

As of 4 pm. on July 29, the recovery effort had uncovered 128 individual sets of remains and 22 others from four mass graves, along with a number of personal artefacts.

500-day-and-night campaign: 1,488 martyrs’ remains recovered

As of July 25, search teams had located and repatriated 1,488 sets of martyrs’ remains in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Additional remains have also been discovered in the northern province of Tuyen Quang and Ho Chi Minh City.
