Bac Ninh: sweet pomelos poised for export

Updated: 09:52, 10/10/2026

BAC NINH - Lush pomelo orchards laden with fruit provide a stable source of income, helping many families improve their livelihoods. With output estimated at around 47,000 tonnes, pomelo growers across Bac Ninh are preparing for what is expected to be a bumper harvest.

Nearly 5,000 square metres of green-skinned pomelos grow in the orchard owned by Vu Tri Nghia in Duc Giang hamlet, Dong Phu commune.

Vu Tri Nghia in Duc Giang hamlet, Dong Phu commune harvests green-skinned pomelos.

Beneath the dark green canopy, clusters of plump, round fruit hang from the branches. Having cultivated pomelos for nearly 20 years, Nghia has continued to build on his cultivation experience with each harvest.

Thanks to proper farming techniques, the trees grow steadily and maintain consistent fruit quality. For years, Nghia and his wife have not needed to take their produce to market, as customers purchase all the ripe fruit directly at the orchard.

This year, the orchard is expected to yield nearly 5,000 pomelos, selling for 20,000–30,000 VND each and generating estimated revenue of more than 125 million VND (4,830 USD).

In Tan Truong residential area of Chu ward, Tran Dinh En cultivates around 1.5 hectares of land with more than 700 pomelo trees. His orchard produces approximately 50,000 pomelos annually, generating revenue of over 1 billion VND and providing seasonal employment for four to seven workers.

In Luc Son commune, Le The Long has taken a different approach by growing pomelos shaped with the characters “Phuc” (Prosperity), “Loc” (Wealth) and “Tho” (Longevity) for the gift market, particularly during the Lunar New Year (Tet).

Some larger orchards have also combined fruit sales with visitor tours and experiential activities, creating additional sources of income.

According to the city Department of Industry and Trade and local authorities, pomelo cultivation is delivering increasingly evident economic benefits.

Annual revenue from pomelo production across the city is estimated at around 1.8 trillion VND (69.55 million USD). Many orchard owners earn hundreds of millions to billions of VND per harvest. Beyond improving household incomes, these orchards also create jobs and raise earnings for rural workers.

This year, Bac Ninh has approximately 5,200 hectares of pomelo orchards, accounting for nearly 45% of its total fruit-growing area, with output estimated at 47,000 tonnes, up from the previous year.

Of this area, around 3,660 hectares, or more than 70%, are cultivated under VietGAP practices, while 10 hectares meet organic standards.

Growers have selected varieties with different ripening periods to extend the harvest season and reduce market pressure from an oversupply of fruit at any one time.

Hoang and green-skinned pomelos are already being harvested, with the season running from September to November 2026, followed by Dao Duong, Dien and Suu varieties.

Meanwhile, the red Tan Lac and Tien Vua pomelos are still developing and are expected to be harvested between December 2026 and February 2027, helping meet consumer demand during the Lunar New Year.

Vietnam’s recent signing of a protocol permitting pomelo exports to China has opened up broader market opportunities for the fruit. However, access to these markets also entails stricter requirements for product quality, food safety and traceability in designated growing areas.

Bac Ninh currently has one pomelo-growing area code covering 1.8 hectares in the Tan Truong residential area of Chu ward for domestic sales.

Dao Duong pomelos have already reached the Russian market through export partnerships established by Phuong Son Agricultural Processing Cooperative.

The Department of Agriculture and Environment has proposed the registration of 19 additional growing areas, covering a total of 50.9 hectares across Luc Ngan, Chu, Phuong Son and Van Son communes and wards, for exports to China.

It is also continuing to guide growers in meeting the requirements for maintaining existing registration codes, helping pomelos gain access to other markets, including the Republic of Korea, the United States and New Zealand.

According to Vu Tri Dong, deputy head of the department’s Sub-Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, pomelo production must be standardised to meet market requirements, particularly those of export markets.

Alongside technical measures, the department and relevant agencies will continue inviting businesses involved in fruit distribution and export value chains to survey growing areas across the city, with the aim of strengthening market linkages, expanding exports and further enhancing the value of Bac Ninh’s agricultural products in international markets.
