For this Lunar New Year occasion (or Tet), Le Duc Luyen’s family in Trai Chay residential group, Phuong Son ward has about 2,000 red pomelos to supply the market.

The whole garden has been contracted to purchase by a trader from Quang Ninh province at an average price of 100,000 to 120,000 VND (3.85 to 4.62 USD) per each fruit, which will be harvested ahead of Tet to sell consumers as an offering to the ancestors.

Luyen earns a profit of around 100 million VND (3,846 USD) after deducting all expenses.

According to Luyen, this red pomelo crop is the longest one ever. He has harvested pomelos since October 2025 until Tet.

Grasping the increasing demand for red pomelo, which is used as offerings on the 1st and 15th days of the lunar month even on normal days, he has transplanted red pomelos to existing sweet pomelo trees for recent 3 years.

This pomelo species has become a favourite fruit because it can be kept for some months with long lasting fragrance.

It is a fast-selling product, which is paid higher prices than the purchasing contract by many consumers; however, Luyen refused as he committed to selling the whole garden to one trader.

Thanks to his strong reputation and reliability, he has not had to worry about finding buyers for many years. As long as he produces good quality products, they all will be purchased

When visiting Luyen’s garden, we saw pomelos covered by a special type of paper bag, which is different from other gardeners.

“Paper bag helps to protect the environment rather than using plastic one. Besides, the fruits must be protected by a type of bag with dark-coloured inner layer in line with fertilizing through leaves and roots to ensure the pomelos are bright red, evenly ripened and have a glossy surface”, said Luyen.

Through continuous experimentation, research and learning in doing farm work, farmers have created unique and attractive fruits.

Apart from Phuong Son ward, many orchard owners in the communes of Luc Ngan, Truong Son and Chu town also plant red pomelo and earn high profits.

According to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment, the province will supply around 1.5 million red pomelos to the market.

This is a new fruit species with beautiful appearance created by skillful transplanting techniques to supply the nationwide market, contributing to increasing value of the agricultural products.
