A state-level funeral took place in Ho Chi Minh City on the morning of January 14 for General Le Van Dung, Hero of the People’s Armed Forces.

The ceremony was jointly organised by the Party Central Committee, the National Assembly (NA), the State President, the Government and the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee in accordance with state-level protocols.

A delegation of the Party Central Committee led by Politburo member and Standing Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Do Van Chien paid respects to General Dung and conveyed condolences to his family.

The delegation included former Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, former State Presidents Nguyen Minh Triet and Truong Tan Sang, former Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, former Chairpersons of the National Assembly Nguyen Sinh Hung and Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, and General Nguyen Trong Nghia, Politburo member, Secretary of the Party Central Committee and Chairman of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army.

In the condolence book, Chien wrote that with 81 years of life and more than 60 years of Party membership, General Dung had made major and outstanding contributions to the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation.

He described the late man’s revolutionary career as a shining example, and said his passing represented a profound loss to the Party, the State, the armed forces and the people.

On behalf of the Party, the military and the people, Chien pledged efforts to continue building the Party clean and strong, comprehensively advance renewal, strive towards the goal of a “prosperous people and strong, democratic, equitable, and civilised nation”, and firmly safeguard the socialist Fatherland.

Also paying their last respects were the State President delegation led by Vice State President Vo Thi Anh Xuan, the National Assembly delegation led by Standing Vice Chairman Do Van Chien, the Government delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Mai Van Chinh, together with representatives of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee, the Central Military Commission, the Central Public Security Party Committee, central agencies, units of the Ministry of National Defence, several provinces and cities, and members of the public.

After that, the memorial service was held and will be followed by a burial ceremony in late afternoon on the same day.

General Dung, born Nguyen Van Noi on December 25, 1945 in Phong My commune, Giong Trom district, Ben Tre province (now Luong Hoa commune, Vinh Long province), enlisted in the army in 1963 and joined the Communist Party of Vietnam in 1965.

He served as a member of the Party Central Committee during the 8th, 9th and 10th terms, Secretary of the Party Central Committee in the 9th and 10th terms, and a National Assembly deputy during the 11th and 12th terms.

He previously held the positions of Deputy Minister of National Defence, Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, and Director of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army.

Due to old age and serious illness, he passed away at his residence on January 9 at the age of 81.

The funeral for General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Nguyen Phu Trong is organised in the national mourning etiquette. The respect-paying and memorial ceremonies take place concurrently at the National Funeral Hall, No. 5 Tran Thanh Tong street, Hanoi, Thong Nhat Hall in Ho Chi Minh City and at the leader’s native land in Dong Hoi commune, Dong Anh district, Hanoi.
