The old stone stele that records historical events relating to the Mai Suu Military Training Centre has degraded. |
At a total cost of 90 million VND (nearly 4,000 USD), the steles are made of monolithic green stone blocks and engraved with information about the historical significance of events associated with the relic sites. They are expected to be unveiled this December.
According to the engraved information provided by the provincial Museum, the Party Committee of Viet Bac Inter-region set up a steering board for Ca Pass battlefield led by Deputy Secretary of the Inter-region’s Party Committee Vu Duong in February 1954.
More than 500 people of the steering board and the youth volunteers’ units of C231 and C232 always stood ready to repair roads, bridges, boats and ferries damaged by French colonialists to ensure smooth traffic for the resistance war against France.
In July 2007, Ca Pass was named a historical – cultural relic site by the Chairperson of the provincial People’s Committee.
Meanwhile, Hon Mieu Hill was the base of many army units from the war against France to the war to protect the northern border. In May 1968, the Defence Ministry set up Regiment 568 at this place. During its stay in Hon Mieu Hill, the regiment recruited and trained new soldiers who later crossed Truong Son Mountain Range to support the fight against the US in southern Vietnam. It also helped the local administration and people to keep order and ensure the safety of military secrets.
In 1970, Regiment 568 expanded its recruitment to other areas, including Hung Yen and Thai Binh provinces and Hai Phong city. Hon Mieu Hill was named a historical relic site by the Chairperson of the provincial People’s Committee in January 2003.
