Vietnam plans thousands of AI cameras to monitor drivers nationwide

Updated: 09:11, 05/10/2025

Vietnam's traffic police department has proposed installing thousands of AI-powered cameras across the country to spot violations, ease congestion and help prevent accidents.

The department under the Ministry of Public Security said Oct. 2 the new system would not only detect common offenses like running red lights, not wearing helmets or failing to buckle seat belts, but also provide real-time traffic flow data to the public so they can choose better routes.

The project will be managed through a two-level command center: a national hub at the Traffic Police headquarters and 34 provincial centers.

A trial is already underway with nine new-generation AI cameras on the Noi Bai–Lao Cai Expressway and on central Hanoi streets like Pham Van Bach.

The cameras will automatically capture images and videos of violations, along with details about the location, time and type of offense.

The system will then cross-check with the national vehicle registration database to identify owners before police review the footage and issue penalties.

Officials said the technology would act "like patrol officers on the road," simultaneously catching violations and regulating traffic flow.

The data will also be used to train the AI further, boosting its ability to detect even more types of violations in the future.
