Updated: 16:07, 25/11/2025

A tropical depression has appeared off the coast of the Philippines and could develop into the 15th storm in the East Sea in the coming days.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported that at 8 a.m. on Monday, the tropical depression lay over the eastern waters of the central Philippines, with maximum winds of 61 kph, moving west-northwest at 20 kph.

The predicted trajectory of a tropical depression en route to south central Vietnam.

By 7 a.m. Tuesday, the tropical depression will remain over the central Philippines with the same intensity, speed, and direction before entering the East Sea, which is known internationally as by the South China Seae.

By 7 a.m. on Wednesday, it is expected to strengthen into a storm over the southeastern waters of the central part of the sea, with maximum winds reaching 61–74 kph.

The Japan Meteorological Agency also estimate that around Wednesday, the tropical depression will enter the East Sea and intensify into a storm, reaching maximum sustained winds of approximately 82 kph near the Spratly Islands off Vietnam's south-central coast, the area which has been battered by devastating floods brought by heavy rains for the past week.

Since the beginning of the year, the South China Sea has recorded 14 storms and 5 tropical depressions, making 2025 by far the second most active storm year in 30 years, only after 2017 which saw 20 storms.

Storms including Wutip, Wipha, Kajiki, Nongfa, Ragasa, Bualoi, Matmo, Fengshen, and Kalmaegi have directly affected or caused heavy rain and flooding in northern and central Vietnam.

In addition to storms, other adverse weather systems have also caused severe rain and flooding, particularly in the central and south-central regions.

Meteorologists forecast that in the coming month, one to two storms or tropical depressions may appear in the East Sea and could affect mainland Vietnam.
