A loaf of banh mi is filled with cucumber, pickles and salted shredded pork on top of pate and butter served at a stall in HCMC. |
Ranking second worldwide is banh mi heo quay, or roasted pork belly banh mi.
This variation features roasted pork tucked into a baguette and layered with mayonnaise, pickles, cucumber, and herbs. Found at street food stalls, it remains one of the most popular versions of the sandwich across the country.
At number three is the classic banh mi.
Made with a baguette introduced during the French colonial era, the sandwich reflects a blend of cultures. The bread, butter and pate come from French traditions, while herbs, chili and pickles give it a Vietnamese flavor.
Early versions were simple, with just bread, meat and basic seasonings. Over time, banh mi has evolved into countless variations, often filled with cold cuts, butter and pate.
Claiming the seventh spot is banh mi thit, known as meat and cold cuts banh mi or banh mi Saigon. This version features a mix of cold cuts, such as cha lua (pork roll) or ham. Garnished with pickles and herbs, it serves as a culinary staple throughout Vietnam.
The list was led by Turkey’s tombik doner. This specialty features shredded meat stuffed in a bun-shaped flatbread known as pide ekmek, complemented by tomatoes, onions, and assorted sauces.
