3 Vietnam airports brace for direct Typhoon Matmo impacts

Updated: 16:25, 05/10/2025

Three airports in Hanoi, Hai Phong City and Quang Ninh Province are expected to be directly affected by Typhoon Matmo which is forecast to make landfall Monday.

The Civil Aviation Authority has ordered Noi Bai International Airport, Cat Bi International Airport and Van Don International Airport to remain staffed 24/7, conduct infrastructure inspections, implement storm prevention plans, and ensure the safety of flight operations.

An aircraft leaves Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi on April 16, 2024.

Tho Xuan, Vinh and Dien Bien airports are advised to be on high alert.

For the airports facing direct impact, the Airports Corporation of Vietnam is responsible for leading and coordinating with relevant agencies to inspect infrastructure and communication systems, promptly detect and repair any damage, ensuring the safety of facilities, control towers, and operational activities.

Units must implement storm-prevention strategies, clear drainage systems, protect structures, vehicles, and equipment, minimize losses caused by heavy rain and winds, and quickly restore aviation services for passengers.

Airports that are under construction must identify technical stop points to suspend work during adverse weather, ensuring safety and limiting damage.

Typhoon Matmo is expected to make landfall in Quang Ninh Province, home to Ha Long Bay, on Monday morning, with wind speed of 75-88 kilometers per hour, according to the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting.

Hanoi is unlikely to experience strong winds from the storm but will see rainfall of 70–120 mm, in some places over 150 mm, from early Monday to Tuesday.

Hanoi authorities have advised companies to let employees work remotely and urged the education department to allow students to stay home on Monday.

The General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army on Sunday established an inspection team to oversee Typhoon Matmo response efforts.

This inspection team will coordinate with the Quang Ninh Provincial Military Command to monitor, supervise, and assess the implementation of response measures.
