Bac Ninh classmates win silver at 2026 International Biology Olympiad
BAC NINH - Two classmates from Bac Giang High School for the Gifted, now part of Bac Ninh Province, have made history by becoming the school's first students to compete at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO), with both winning silver medals at the 2026 competition.
Than Duc Chinh and Phung Quang Hung, both 12th-grade biology majors, were among the four members of Vietnam's national team at the 37th International Biology Olympiad, held in Lithuania from July 12 to 19.

The competition attracted nearly 300 contestants from 86 countries and territories and consisted of theoretical and practical examinations. All four Vietnamese contestants earned silver medals, helping the country rank eighth overall.
Chinh built an impressive academic record before reaching the international stage. During grades 10 and 11, he won consecutive gold medals at the Northern Coastal and Red River Delta Regional Biology Competition.

In the 2024–2025 academic year, while still an 11th grader, he claimed third prize in Vietnam's National Excellent Student Competition in Biology.
A year later, he improved to first prize and achieved the country's highest score in the second-round selection for Vietnam's regional and international Olympiad team.
Chinh said he hopes to study at Hanoi Medical University, where he plans to pursue biomedical research and train as a physician.
His classmate Hung has followed a similarly distinguished path. The pair have consistently achieved top results together in domestic and international academic competitions.
Hung won first prize in the national biology competition while in grade 11, earning a place in the selection process for Vietnam's regional and international Olympiad team in 2025.

In grade 12, he secured second prize at the national competition before being selected for the 2026 International Biology Olympiad, where he also received a silver medal.
Like Chinh, Hung plans to enroll at Hanoi Medical University and continue advanced studies in biomedical science.
Their achievements have been supported by teachers at Bac Giang High School for the Gifted.
Biology teacher and homeroom instructor Do Thi Huong said both students possess strong academic foundations, a passion for biology and considerable potential for advanced research in genetics, synthetic biology and evolution, qualities reflected in their outstanding competition results.
