After completing ritual ceremonies, participating families present carefully prepared trays of sticky rice and chicken as offerings at the communal house.
Contest entries must meet strict traditional standards. The boiled chicken must remain upright on the tray, with golden skin, straight wings and a properly positioned head and beak. The sticky rice must be white, soft and evenly arranged on a flat tray.
Families spend months selecting and raising chickens, choosing premium glutinous rice varieties and learning the proper presentation techniques in accordance with local customs.
The event helps reinforce community bonds while preserving Bac Ninh's distinctive cultural heritage, showcasing residents' craftsmanship and devotion through both religious practices and traditional cuisine.
For Nguyen Van Toan, a resident of An Binh neighborhood and a previous prize winner, the greatest reward is helping safeguard his hometown's customs.
Preparing the offering tray also provides younger family members with an opportunity to learn about the festival and appreciate the traditions passed down through generations.
Bac Ninh also hosts several other traditional competitions, including a phu the cake-wrapping contest at Do Temple, a clay-pot rice cooking contest at Ha communal house in Nha Nam Commune, and a banh chung wrapping contest in Van Village, Hoang Van Commune.
These events promote traditional crafts and local specialties while helping preserve the cultural heritage of the Kinh Bac region and attracting visitors.
