Da Nang plans dragon mascot park

Updated: 14:35, 19/02/2024
Da Nang authorities are planning to create a home for this year's Tet dragon mascots by building a coastal park that will be open to the public for all to enjoy.

The park will be located near the intersection of Vo Van Kiet and Vo Nguyen Giap streets in Son Tra District. The city is now collecting used dragon statues and mascots that were made for the Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday festival.

Phung Phu Phong, director of the Da Nang Department of Construction, said Friday that the plan is to build the park on part of a 2.8-hectare lot previously planned for a financial center project.

"The financial center has not been developed, leaving the area neglected and unsightly. A dragon mascot park will create a new tourist destination and refurbish the coastal landscape at the same time," he said.

For this Tet, the year of the dragon, dragon mascots could be found throughout Da Nang, Vietnam's central hub, and its environs to ring in the new year.

They included moving dragon statues that breathed both fire and water with light and sound effects at the tail of the central city’s famous Dragon Bridge, as well a 60-m-long dragon at the head of the bridge. The display was guarded by three other dragon mascots with lighting effects, as well as 100 dragon eggs and baby dragons.

In the 2023 Tet, cat mascots displayed at various spring flower decoration spots were donated to kindergartens in the city.

This year, the large, sophisticated dragon mascots were difficult to place in schools, according to the Construction Department.
