Marathon footprints on Kinh Bac land: A journey to connect heritage

Updated: 21:41, 01/03/2026

BAC NINH – Early in March, the sports activities for the public in Bac Ninh province will be bustling with two large-scale running events: The Nagakawa “Healthy for Career and Protecting the Country” – Bac Ninh Newspaper and Radio-Television Cup, and the Bac Ninh Legacy Marathon - Footprints of Quan Ho 2026. These events are not just sports activities but also opportunities to spread the spirit of fitness and promote the image of Bac Ninh – Kinh Bac rich in cultural heritage.

The first Nagakawa Cup will expand in scale, attracting thousands of amateur athletes from the province.

The Cung Temple - Ngoc Well historical site (Kinh Bac ward) is one of the key heritage highlights on the Bac Ninh Legacy Marathon - Footprints of Quan Ho race route.

According to the organisers, the event will include multiple categories suitable for different groups. The opening ceremony will feature a large-scale race in celebration of the Olympic Day for Public Health 2026, with nearly 2,000 participants including provincial leaders, civil servants, seniors, youth, students, armed forces, and the general public.

After the opening, there will be competitions in age-group categories (10-15 years and 16-60 years) and an overall championship (for athletes aged 15 and above). The overall championship will be part of the first provincial Sports Festival’s long-distance running competition.

The race course will wind through streets near the Kinh Bac Cultural Centre Square (Kinh Bac ward), featuring green spaces. This event is not only a sports competition but also highly community-oriented, involving people of all ages and backgrounds, reaffirming the sustainable development of mass sports and promoting a dynamic, integrated Bac Ninh while preserving its traditional identity.

If the Nagakawa Cup will focus on encouraging sports participation among the public, the Bac Ninh Legacy Marathon - Footprints of Quan Ho 2026 will offer a cultural experience.

Named "Footprints of Quan Ho," the marathon aims to connect sports with heritage. Bac Ninh, once part of the Kinh Bac region, is the birthplace of Quan Ho (love duet) folk singing, with ancient villages along the Cau River, curved communal halls, ponds, and pagoda yards - perfect backdrops for a marathon celebrating local culture.

The most unique feature of this marathon is the race course, which passes through many historical and cultural landmarks of Bac Ninh, such as Ba Chua Kho Temple, Cung Temple - Ngoc Well, Lim Festival Square, the Old Citadel of Bac Ninh, the Quan Ho Theater, and Kinh Bac Cultural Centre. Athletes will run through ancient Quan Ho villages like Viem Xa, Huu Chap, Co Me, Dau Han, Lung Giang, and Due Dong.

Participants can compete in distances of 5 km, 10 km, 21 km, and 42 km. In its second edition, the event is not only drawing local runners but also attracting international runners, those passionate about exploring local culture through sports.

It offers a great opportunity to promote the image of a friendly, hospitable, and culturally rich Bac Ninh to international friends. In addition to the competition, the organisers plan to showcase local food, folk games, and Quan Ho cultural exchanges.

The combination of the marathon and cultural tourism will further elevate Bac Ninh’s profile on the map of sports and tourism.
