Muskmelon brings double or triple income than rice cultivation

Muskmelon is a tasteful, fresh and nutritious fruit which is preferred by many people. It can help treat some diseases, beautify the skin and relieve the heat in summer.

Nguyen Thi Son in Duc Quang village said growing muskmelon can bring her double or even triple income comparing to rice and vegetable cultivation so her family switched to grow this crop on two sao (old measuring unit, each is equal to 360 square meters) of high field.

It takes low cost to grow the fruit because it is unnecessary to make the frame and the farmer can actively collect and dry seeds of good and sweet fruits from this year to use for next crop

Previously, the villagers mostly grew rice with low productivity. So they boldly changed the crop structure and developed high economic vegetables and fruits, including the muskmelon.

According to Nguyen Van Linh, agriculture encouragement official in Bich Dong town, at first there were only some households in the village to grow this crop. Later on, when they saw its high value and productivity as well as ease consumption, the locals switched to grow this fruit tree.

Now, about 40 households in Duc Quang village grow muskmelon on total area of two ha. Thanks to favorable weather condition this year with less rain, the crop well develops that gives good quality fruits.

Each sao of muskmelon can give 0.7 to one ton of fruit. In early season, the farmer sold the fruit at 10 – 12,00 VND per kg while the selling price is about 5-7,000 VND per kg at this moment. Deducting the production cost, the grower can earn benefit of 8 – 10 million VND per sao (equivalent to 200 million VND per ha).

Particularly, the local muskmelon is safe without any preservation chemical because on the harvest season, the fruit will be ripen soon right at the field.

Area planning and advanced technology transfer are needed

Actually, growing muskmelon helps farmers in Duc Quang village, Bich Dong town earn stable income. However, there are several shortcomings for them when their field is small and scattered. Only individual households grow the crop without planning a centralized cultivation area.

Besides, most of the locals are not experienced in worm and disease prevention. In some years, the productivity was reduced 50 percent because of rotten fruits.

To encourage the farmers to expand the growing area and enhance the productivity, it is necessary to have active participation from the authority at all levels to plan a centralized cultivation area, accelerate the technical transfer for actual application at local fields.

Bac Giang to export over 4,200 tonnes of processed farm produce to RoK

(BGO) – Vifoco Import Export Joint Stock Company in Bac Giang city (Vifoco) (Bac Giang province) has inked contract to export over 4,200 tonnes of processed farm produce of potato, carrot and pumpkin to the Republic of Korea (RoK) in 2022. Farmers in mountainous district earn over 6 billion VND per year from wild honey

(BGO) – The Son Dong Organic Honey Bee Cooperative (Son Dong district, Bac Giang province) was established in 2014 with only 29 members, but now its members have increased to 44. In 2020, the amount of honey collected reached 120 tonnes, fetching 6.5 billion VND (286,150 USD). Its members has an average income of 3-5 million VND per month, even some earn 10 million VND per month.
