The event is jointly organized by the Department of Performing Arts under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Bac Ninh Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Vietnam Stage Artists Association.

Artists and performers from the Bac Ninh Cheo Theater rehearse for their play “Thien Menh” to be staged at the 2025 National Cheo Festival.

The event expects to draw 14 and 17 professional Cheo art troupes from across the country with nearly 1,000 actors and musicians performing.

The participating troupes will present a wide range of distinctive plays showcasing the creativity, talent, and dedication of artists devoted to Cheo – a national intangible cultural heritage currently being prepared for nomination to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The festival offers an opportunity for art troupes to exchange ideas, learn from one another in composition, staging and performance and to honor outstanding works, artists, directors and musicians who have made significant contributions to the Cheo art form.

It also provides Bac Ninh residents a chance to enjoy high-quality performances while raising public awareness of Cheo’s cultural value and its role in contemporary life.

Hosting the event in Bac Ninh is also an opportunity to promote the image of Kinh Bac – the land and people of rich cultural heritage – to audiences nationwide, helping boost local culture, tourism, and socio-economic development.

Cheo melodies resound in highland

BAC GIANG- As mentioning the art of Cheo, many people often talk about popular Cheo villages in the lowland such as Hoang Mai and Nenh ward in Viet Yen township, Tu Mai and Dong Quan in Bac Giang city. However, in the mountainous area of Son Dong district, a Cheo singing club of Thanh Tra village, Le Vien commune has been established and preserved for many generations attracting a large number of local people.
