Vietnam named among destinations 'worth every penny' by US media

Updated: 09:45, 23/08/2026

Travel Off Path has named Vietnam among 12 destinations offering strong value for money, citing its diverse landscapes, cuisine and range of travel experiences.

"It feels like every popular destination is suddenly charging premium prices for a deeply mediocre experience," wrote an article published on Aug. 14 by the U.S. travel website.

According to the publication, travelers do not necessarily have to "empty their wallets" to enjoy a memorable trip.

There are still destinations where every dollar spent delivers strong value and the experience can far exceed its price. Vietnam is among the 12 countries selected on this basis.

The article highlights three defining characteristics of Vietnam: vibrant energy, dramatic limestone karsts, and renowned street food.

From the waterways of the Mekong Delta to the mist-covered mountains of Sa Pa, the publication says the country offers travelers significant "visual payoff" and ranks among destinations offering strong value-for-money experiences.

Vietnam's appeal, however, extends beyond affordable bowls of pho or competitively priced accommodation. The value of a journey also comes from the number and variety of experiences travelers can fit into a single trip.

Vietnam's varied terrain allows the character of a journey to change considerably from one destination to another.

In Sa Pa, travelers can wake up amid mountains appearing and disappearing behind clouds before taking a cable car to the 3,143-meter summit of Fansipan.

A visit to Sun World Fansipan Legend extends beyond checking in at the "Roof of Indochina" to a spiritual and cultural complex, Ban May Village with its traditional houses, local crafts, and highland cuisine, and a 50,000-square-meter rose valley.

In central Vietnam, travelers can experience a completely different setting within a single day. From the tropical coastal city of Da Nang, a cable car takes visitors more than 1,400 meters above sea level to Sun World Ba Na Hills, where cooler temperatures and the French Village offer a contrast to the coast below.

The Golden Bridge, Fantasy Park, Lunar Castle, festivals, live shows, and other activities combine sightseeing, recreation, dining, and entertainment for families.

In Ha Long, visitors can spend the morning exploring the UNESCO-listed bay and its thousands of limestone islands, take in panoramic views in the afternoon from the Queen Cable Car and the 215-meter-high Sun Wheel, then continue the evening in Bai Chay with food, street performances, DJs, 3D mapping shows, and artistic fireworks.

If Sa Pa, Ha Long, and Da Nang show how a journey can move between nature, culture, and entertainment, Phu Quoc illustrates another trend: a beach holiday no longer needs to revolve solely around the beach.

The island has long been known for its white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, and high-end resorts. Within the same trip, however, visitors can move between relaxation, recreation, exploration, and entertainment without leaving the island.

A day in southern Phu Quoc can begin with a cable car journey across the sea to Hon Thom, followed by rides and attractions at Aquatopia and an afternoon at the ocean-facing infinity pool at Santo Beach Club. As the sun sets, visitors can head to Sunset Town, home to Kiss Bridge, multimedia shows, and nightly artistic fireworks.

Moving from the beach to an amusement park, from relaxation to entertainment, and from daytime activities to evening experiences expands what travelers can enjoy during a single holiday. They do not necessarily have to choose between taking a break and having fun but can combine both.

Good value is not simply about spending less but about what travelers receive in return.

From misty Sa Pa and Ha Long Bay to the cooler heights of Ba Na Hills and the fireworks of Phu Quoc, a journey through Vietnam can move from mountains to sea, nature to culture, and relaxation to recreation.

Travelers may arrive in Vietnam for a single trip but return home having experienced several different types of holiday.

At a time when travel value is increasingly measured by the experiences received rather than simply the amount spent, this diversity helps make Vietnam a destination "worth every penny," as noted by Travel Off Path.
