Vietnamese teen beats global competition to win sole full scholarship at top Australian university

Updated: 15:38, 01/07/2025

A Vietnamese high school senior has won the sole full-tuition scholarship for international students at the University of Technology Sydney this year, beating global competition with a combination of academic excellence, leadership and creative flair.

Ngo Xuan Nam, a 12th grader at Chu Van An High School for the Gifted in Hanoi, won the highly competitive UTS International Undergraduate President's Scholarship, covering 100% of tuition for his Information Systems degree starting this July. Only one international student is selected per intake for this top honor.

"I was so surprised I kept rereading the announcement, even asking my friends to double-check if it was real," Nam recalled.

His journey toward this milestone started early. Beginning English lessons at age four, Nam grew up immersed in global perspectives and diverse cultures through books, online content and academic programs.

In middle school, he enrolled in a dual-degree program at Trung Vuong Secondary School, taking IGCSE courses in math, physics, chemistry, computer science and English.

By high school, he advanced into the Cambridge A-Level program, fully aware that securing a full international scholarship would require exceptional academic performance.

To prepare, Nam followed a disciplined study routine: consistent daily learning, active class engagement, thorough homework and extra self-study when needed. In the months before his exams, he ramped up to taking two full practice tests a day.

The effort paid off. Nam earned 3 A* grades with standout scores: 99% in math and 95% in both physics and chemistry, alongside a 7.5 IELTS score, making him a highly competitive applicant.

Earlier this year, Nam applied to UTS, the University of Sydney and Monash University, receiving scholarship offers from all three. But UTS offered the highest award, paired with a rigorous selection process that included an essay and a video presentation showcasing leadership skills.

In his essay, Nam emphasized his leadership philosophy: true leaders inspire and empower others. He recounted leading his team to back-to-back victories at the International Science Competition in Malaysia and Indonesia, where he assigned roles, led coding efforts and presented projects.

He also served as head coach for his school's girls' football team, crafting tactics and leading training sessions that helped the team secure third place in a school tournament.

Determined to stand out in his video submission, Nam rejected the typical talking-head format. Instead, he created a vibrant, energetic video featuring dynamic visuals, music and natural English narration that reflected his personality, achievements and creativity.

"I didn't want to be like everyone else. I wanted the admissions committee to remember me," he said.

Just a month later, UTS notified Nam of his successful scholarship award.

Nam's homeroom teacher, Nguyen Bao Tram, praised him as a disciplined, well-rounded student who consistently ranked among the top of his class.

Beyond his A-Level studies, he maintained a 9.7 GPA (out of 10) in Vietnam's national curriculum and actively participated in sports and cultural exchange programs.

"His math, physics, and chemistry teachers all praise his outstanding intelligence. His A-Level math teacher once said Nam would be a treasure if he pursues a career in mathematics," Tram shared.

Later this month, Nam will begin his three-year undergraduate program in Australia. After graduation, he hopes to gain work experience abroad and eventually pursue a master's degree.
