Nguyen Dinh Tam, chairman of the Thanh Nhat Ward People's Committee, presents a certificate of merit and award to Thach Chi Khang (R) for saving his friend from being killed in a massacre. |
During a flag-raising ceremony, officials presented Khang with a certificate of merit and a letter of commendation, praising his act as "a message of love and readiness to help others in hardship."
The ward has also petitioned the provincial People’s Committee to give him an extraordinary award. Alongside official recognition, teachers, organizations, and local residents contributed gifts and financial support to encourage him.
The recognition comes after a horrifying crime at around 1 a.m. on Sept. 13, when Nguyen Nam Dai Thuan, 37, stormed into the home of his ex-wife, Nguyen Thi Kim Hoa, killing Hoa, her mother and brother, and seriously injuring her 13-year-old son, Nguyen Tan Phat.
Despite being stabbed, Phat managed to scale a wall into Khang's house next door in a desperate bid for help.
Instead of panicking, Khang let his bloodied friend in, locked the doors, laid him on a bed, gave him water and comforted him. At around 3 a.m., when police arrived at the scene, Khang opened the door so Phat could be rushed to hospital.
Doctors later confirmed that the boy's survival was due in part to Khang's calm and protective actions.
