Bac Giang applies biotechnology to develop safe agriculture

Updated: 17:50, 05/05/2025

BAC GIANG – In recent years, Bac Giang province has paid special attention to research, application and development of biotechnology in agricultural production, thereby promoting high-tech, efficient and sustainable farming.

After two years of implementation, at the beginning of 2024, a research team from Bac Giang University of Agriculture and Forestry guided many livestock households in Hiep Hoa District and Viet Yen Township to establish disease-safe cattle farming models.

Nguyen Van Hoan maintains a disease-safe cattle farming model.

Nguyen Van Hoan’s household, in Ranh Residential Group of Tu Lan Ward (Viet Yen Township), is one of the participants.

Each year, Hoan’s family raises over 50 3B beef cattle. Since 2022, thanks to adopting solutions recommended by the research team, his herd has remained disease-free and developed healthily.

Each fattening cycle lasts nearly six months; at harvest, each cow weighs about 400 kg and sells for an average of nearly 30 million VND (over 1,300 USD) per head. From cattle farming, his family earns over 1 billion VND annually.

The fragrant wood tree (Vu huong) is a rare species valued for its timber and essential oils. In previous years, the species population had dwindled, mainly growing naturally in Tay Yen Tu Nature Reserve (Son Dong district).

To restore and promote the value of the fragrant wood tree, Bac Giang province has collaborated with the Vietnam Academy of Forest Sciences and other relevant units to research and establish planting models in Luc Ngan District, aiming to transfer high-quality seedlings and advanced techniques to improve plantation productivity and quality.

To date, Bac Giang has established a 0.5-hectare nursery using seeds and cuttings in Tan Lap Commune (Luc Ngan district) with thousands of quality seedlings and 5 hectares of intensive fragrant wood plantations in the same location.

Over 90% of the trees are healthy, nearly 5 meters tall which have been properly maintained according to technical procedures.

Recently, many households inside and outside the district have expressed interest in propagating and planting fragrant wood trees for their economic value, soil erosion prevention and environmental protection.

These are just two among hundreds of effective models and solutions related to the research and application of biotechnology in agricultural production.

According to the Department of Science and Technology, from 2021 to now, the province has conducted over 150 provincial- and grassroots-level scientific research projects across various fields, 60 of which are in agriculture and involve biotechnology applications.

Most projects have proven effective and have been widely replicated in practice, helping increase productivity, prevent disease outbreaks and address environmental pollution.

Examples include models such as using MF1 microbial products to establish Caribbean pine plantations; producing forestry seedlings through tissue culture; applying technical solutions to manage citrus greening disease in Luc Ngan District; improving and developing hybrid Boer goat herds in Luc Ngan and Yen The through sex-sorting technology and using biological agents to treat rice straw and control pests.

Research and application of biotechnology in agricultural production have made increasingly remarkable strides. This achievement is thanks to Bac Giang’s proactive implementation of Resolution No. 36-NQ/TW dated January 30, 2023 of the Politburo on the development and application of biotechnology for sustainable national development in the new context.
