Bac Ninh proposes upgrading Hanoi-Bac Giang section of National Highway 1 to eight-lane expressway

Updated: 10:02, 02/11/2026

BAC NINH - The Hanoi-Bac Giang section of National Highway 1 is planned to become part of the eastern North-South Expressway, with eight lanes and investment scheduled to begin before 2030.

Project Management Unit No. 2 has submitted a report to the Ministry of Construction on the completion of the pre-feasibility study for a project to expand and upgrade the Hanoi-Bac Giang section of National Highway 1 into an expressway under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

The Hanoi-Bac Giang Expressway is being studied for expansion from four to eight lanes.

Under the road network development plan for 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, the Hanoi-Bac Giang section, which forms part of the eastern North-South Expressway, is planned to have eight lanes, with investment scheduled before 2030.

Traffic forecasts indicate that daily traffic volume will reach between 43,418 and 84,656 vehicles in 2030, rising to between 73,193 and 117,214 vehicles by 2050. These projections suggest that all three sections of the route will require eight lanes.

Project Management Unit No. 2 said upgrading the entire route to eight lanes at an early date was therefore necessary to meet growing transport demand.

The proposed project covers nearly 39 km and passes through six wards and two communes in Bac Ninh City, as well as Phu Dong Commune in Hanoi.

The preliminary total investment is estimated at more than 10.7 trillion VND (415 million USD), excluding bank loan interest.
