BAC NINH - Authorities in the northern province of Bac Ninh on February 3 officially recognised Song Lieu ward as a “wartime safe zone” for its role during the resistance war against French colonial rule, honouring the area’s historical contributions to the revolutionary movement.
At a ceremony held in Song Lieu, provincial leaders announced a decision by the Chairman of the Bac Ninh People’s Committee granting the title “Safe Zone during the Anti-French Resistance Period” to the ward, formerly Song Lieu commune

The event was attended by senior officials including Nguyen Hong Thai, a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and Secretary of the Bac Ninh Provincial Party Committee, along with provincial government leaders and representatives of mass organisations.
According to local authorities, Song Lieu was selected by the Party leadership in the early 1940s as part of Safe Zone I, which covered areas of former Bac Ninh province and the outskirts of Hanoi.
Its location and strong revolutionary base enabled it to shelter central Party agencies, host key meetings and training courses, and protect senior revolutionaries during a period of intense repression by French forces.
Between 1939 and 1945, local residents provided food, shelter and protection to numerous senior Party figures, including later national leaders, while ensuring the security of dozens of Party conferences and training sessions.
Song Lieu has previously received multiple state honours, including commendations from the Viet Minh Front, wartime medals and, in 1999, the title “Hero of the People’s Armed Forces” for its outstanding contributions to the anti-French resistance.
Speaking at the ceremony, the provincial Party Chief Nguyen Hong Thai said the recognition reflected the Party and State’s appreciation of the sacrifices made by generations of local cadres and residents. He called on Song Lieu to preserve and promote its revolutionary heritage while accelerating socio-economic development and improving living standards.
Provincial authorities said Bac Ninh would continue to support the ward in preserving historical sites linked to the safe zone and leveraging its cultural values for sustainable development.
