Over 2.6M students in central Vietnam stay home Monday due to Typhoon Bualoi

Updated: 16:57, 28/09/2025

Over 2.6 million students in central Vietnam will stay home Monday as authorities suspend classes to ensure safety from Typhoon Bualoi’s impact.

Authorities in Nghe An announced at midday Sunday that more than 945,000 students would be given the day off to ensure safety as the storm approaches. Ha Tinh followed with closures affecting around 364,000 students.

A school in Ha Tinh prepares to cope with Typhoon Bualoi, Sept. 27, 2025.

Both provinces instructed schools to monitor conditions and be ready to extend suspensions if needed, while arranging make-up lessons to keep the academic year on track.

Quang Tri confirmed earlier that 433,500 students would stay home on Monday. In Thanh Hoa, around 876,000 students from kindergarten to high school will also be off.

From Tuesday, Sept. 30, schools will decide on further closures depending on storm and flood conditions, reporting to local authorities and the provincial education department.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said at 4 a.m. Sunday, Typhoon Bualoi was about 200 km east of Da Nang, packing sustained winds of 133 kph, moving west-northwest at 30 kph.

By late Sunday afternoon the storm was expected to be off the coast between Nghe An and Quang Tri, intensifying and posing disaster risks. By early Monday morning, it is forecast to make landfall between Thanh Hoa and Ha Tinh.

Circulation from the storm has already triggered strong winds and heavy downpours in Quang Tri, Da Nang, Ha Tinh and Hue. Da Nang has instructed local districts to monitor conditions and decide on closures for preschools and schools on Monday and beyond, while universities and vocational colleges can decide independently.

In Hue, though no official province-wide order has been issued, several primary, secondary and FPT high schools have announced Monday closures to ensure safety.

Education authorities reminded schools to closely follow weather updates, take preventive measures, and minimize risks.
