British photographer's portrait of Vietnamese great grandmother wins top National Geographic prize
A striking portrait of a Vietnamese woman sitting beside her great-granddaughter in a dimly lit room as she works on embroidery in Lao Cai Province, home to Sa Pa, has won the National Geographic Traveller (U.K.) Photography Competition 2025.
Captured by British photographer Justin Cliffe, the image was selected from thousands of entries submitted to the prestigious contest organized by National Geographic, winning the People category.

Judges praised the photo for depicting "a moment between generations that captures so much beauty and humanity," according to CNN.
"The colors, light and textures work really well," they added in a press release this week.
Embroidery is a traditional craft passed down through generations among the Red Dao ethnic minority in northern Vietnam.
Other category winners included a mesmerizing photo of a geothermal pool in Iceland resembling an eye, a family-run eatery in Tibet, and a dramatic encounter between a Bonelli's eagle and a fox in Spain.
The annual competition celebrates the best travel photography from around the world, featuring submissions from both amateur and professional photographers based in the U.K. and Ireland.
