Discover Hang Rai – A natural masterpiece within Nui Chua National Park

Updated: 17:06, 11/10/2025

Often described as a “coral paradise on land”, this coastal wonder boasts an ancient fossilised coral reef with striking rock formations that draw travellers eager to explore and marvel at its surreal beauty.

Nestled in Vinh Hai commune in the coastal province of Khanh Hoa, Hang Rai is one of the most captivating attractions within the Nui Chua National Park, which forms part of the Nui Chua World Biosphere Reserve.

Tourists explore the ancient coral reef at Hang Rai, located within the Nui Chua World Biosphere Reserve.

Often described as a “coral paradise on land”, this coastal wonder boasts an ancient fossilised coral reef with striking rock formations that draw travellers eager to explore and marvel at its surreal beauty.

Hang Rai is defined by rugged mountain ranges and clusters of oddly shaped rocks stacked upon one another, set against the park’s distinctive dry coastal forest ecosystem.

Constant waves crash against the cliffs, carving out large cavities that once served as a habitat for otters – the very origin of the site’s name, which literally means “Otter Cave”.

Perhaps most mesmerising is the fossilised coral terrace, a natural sculpture where thousands of sharp rock spires, some rising 20 – 30 cm, pierce upwards while others dip into hollows of varying shapes.

The landscape gives visitors the uncanny impression of walking across a lunar surface, making it a favourite “check-in spot” for photographers and nature lovers alike.

From December to March, a lush green carpet of moss covers the stone surfaces, contrasting beautifully with the deep blue sea. The interplay of colours and textures creates a breathtaking natural tableau.

Beyond sightseeing, visitors to Hang Rai can enjoy a wide range of eco-adventure experiences throughout the national park.

Popular tours include trekking to the Da Do Peak, visiting Vinh Hy Bay, the stone park and Thai An Vineyard, or hiking the scenic coastal trail from Vinh Hy to Binh Tien.

Travellers can also indulge in swimming, glass-bottom boat rides, coral viewing, snorkelling, and other water sports.

According to Nguyen Thanh Trung, Acting Director of the Centre for Tourism and Environmental Education under the Nui Chua – Phuoc Binh National Park Management Board, efforts are being made to promote eco-tourism and environmental education through well-organised tours and community-based experiences.

Hang Rai stands out as a highlight of the Nui Chua National Park thanks to its pristine beauty and dramatic landscapes, he noted.

Work is underway to maintain environmental hygiene, enhance biodiversity education, and constantly improve related tourism services.
