From Nha Rong Wharf, President Ho Chi Minh's legacy shines forever

Updated: 09:34, 06/06/2025

One hundred and fourteen years ago, on June 5, 1911, at Nha Rong Wharf, a young man named Nguyen Tat Thanh boarded a ship, embarking on a 30-year journey around the world in search of a path to national salvation with his burning aspiration of independence and freedom for his people.

The historic wharf is now home to the Ho Chi Minh Museum – Ho Chi Minh City branch, a red address that preserves and promotes the legacy of President Ho Chi Minh.

Spreading legacy of President Ho Chi Minh

The Ho Chi Minh Museum on the banks of the Saigon River stands as a remarkable destination within the Ho Chi Minh Cultural Space.

For over 45 years since its inauguration, the Ho Chi Minh Museum – Ho Chi Minh City branch has fulfilled its mission of researching, collecting, preserving, and exhibiting artefacts while disseminating the values of Ho Chi Minh’s thought, ethics, and lifestyle to people from all walks of life.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Southern Liberation and National Reunification and the 135th birthday of President Ho Chi Minh, the Museum recently received numerous valuable artefacts, including 10 sculptures portraying Ho Chi Minh at various stages of his revolutionary life, gifted by the city’s Fine Arts Association.

Throughout its operation, through a wide range of engaging activities, the Museum has continually contributed to preserving and promoting the legacy of President Ho Chi Minh.

According to the Museum’s Director, Luu Thi Tuyet Trinh, the institution holds over 24,000 artefacts, documents, and photographs; 15 rare collections; and 70 thematic exhibitions.

It is regularly chosen as a venue for political activities, seminars, commemorative ceremonies, Party and Youth Union admissions, and launching points for patriotic emulation movements.

The Museum is consistently open to visitors and frequently hosts delegations of foreign heads of state visiting the city. Annually, it welcomes 450,000 to 500,000 visitors seeking to learn about Ho Chi Minh, many of whom are students, young people, and international tourists.

Tran Duc Anh, a third-year Law student at Sai Gon University, was admitted to the Communist Party at the Museum on June 5, 2022, marking the 111th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh’s departure to find a path to national liberation.

Reflecting on this memorable event, he shared that being admitted to the Party at such a symbolic site was a source of immense pride for young Party members.

It fostered a stronger commitment to self-improvement and learning from Ho Chi Minh’s thought, ethics, and lifestyle, striving to become exemplary citizens and contribute to the development of the city that bears his name.

Standing by the Saigon River, the Museum is a testament to the formation and continuous development of the Saigon Port, and beyond that, to the cultural history of Ho Chi Minh City. It is a destination of interest for domestic and international visitors.

The Museum has repeatedly been ranked among the Top 10 “Most Impressive Attractions” in the “Ho Chi Minh City - 100 Exciting Things” awards. As the city pursues its vision of becoming a smart city, the Museum embraces modern technology and interactive methods to enhance visitor experiences and bring museum activities closer to the public.

Realising aspiration to reach further

In line with the Resolution of the 11th Ho Chi Minh City Party Congress for the 2020–2025 term, authorities have been developing a system of Ho Chi Minh Cultural Spaces throughout the city.

The Museum plays a key role in building a database on President Ho Chi Minh, serving as a resource for the development of these spaces.

According to Tran The Thuan, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports, leveraging the city’s advantage as a river-based area for tourism development, the cultural sector is working on expanding themed exhibitions at the Museum, together with recreation of the Amiral Latouche Tréville, the ship that took young patriot Nguyen Tat Thanh from Nha Rong Wharf in 1911, offering visitors an immersive experience of “President Ho Chi Minh’s Journey” in the present setting.

Entering a new era, Ho Chi Minh City aspires to a bold breakthrough that matches its potential and meets national expectations.

The Politburo has issued Resolution No. 31-NQ/TW, setting goals for the city’s development by 2030, with a vision to 2045, to reach the level of major global cities and become a leading economic, financial and service centre in Asia — a globally attractive destination.

The immediate objective for the 2026–2030 period is to further build a civilised, modern, compassionate city, upholding the spirit of “the city for the nation, and the nation for the city.” The local authorities are intensifying digital transformation, green growth, sustainable development, and environmental protection.

The city focuses on implementing strategic breakthroughs, including improving institutional frameworks and policies, innovating growth models, investing in infrastructure, restructuring urban space, enhancing land-use efficiency, strengthening regional connectivity, advancing high-tech development, cultivating quality human resources, and fostering a core group of strategic enterprises.

The city simultaneously prepares for the merger of provincial-level administrative units, the restructuring of commune-level administrations, and the organisation of local government across two levels.

Retail sales of goods and services rose by 16.8%, total tourism revenue increased by 9.29%, international tourist arrivals grew by over 40%, foreign direct investment surged by 87.5%, and total budget revenue reached over 47%.

These show positive signs of the city’s economic vitality and investor confidence, pushing towards the goal of “double-digit” growth.

At present, the city’s entire political system is focused on managing an immense workload — driving socio-economic development amid common challenges, while ensuring the successful implementation of the commune-level administrative reorganisation scheme by June 2025 and the provincial-level reorganisation scheme before August 15.

The Party Committee, People’s Council, and People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City have united in their resolve and decisive action, standing alongside officials and public servants to accomplish the tasks.

In this new phase of revolution, Ho Chi Minh City is set to become a super urban-industrial-port-service metropolis, unlocking expansive development opportunities and multiple synergies.

According to economic expert Dr Tran Du Lich, the city will serve as the “conductor” steering the Southeast region and the Ho Chi Minh City metropolitan area to become a beacon along the Indo-Pacific corridor.

Driven by its aspiration to rise, the city is unleashing the full potential of a dynamic riverine metropolis, bridging the past with the present so that Ho Chi Minh’s legacy continues to shine in the hearts of the people, fulfilling the promise of a city eternally bearing his name.
