Runners ready for big race

Updated: 13:54, 08/10/2024

BAC GIANG - The Bac Giang Newspaper Half Marathon 2024, themed “Converging in the Sacred Land”, is expected to attract about 1,400 runners. A major sporting event in the province, it is eagerly anticipated by runners, locals and visitors.

The event will officially kick off on the afternoon of October 12. As the race approaches, the training atmosphere among runners has become increasingly vibrant.

Members of the BGR Club are training.

During this time, the Hoang Hoa Tham Park in Bac Giang City is bustling with various long-distance running clubs practicing together. The colourful uniforms of clubs like Bac Giang Runners (BGR), 98 Runners Anta Bac Giang, Yen Dung Runners, Tan Yen Runners, and 98 Runners Hiep Hoa brighten the park. Most members are preparing for the Bac Giang Newspaper Half Marathon 2024.

The BGR club has over 60 members participating in all distances (5 km, 10 km, and 21 km). Nguyen Xuan Dai, the club’s vice head, shared, "To ensure 100% of our members will complete their registered distances, we arrange 2-3 training sessions per week, each lasting about 1-1.5 hours." After practicing, they gathered to rest and share experience and effective running techniques, he added.

The 98 Runners club, one of the oldest in the province, has grown from nearly 70 members at its inception to hundreds across 10 districts, townships and Bac Giang city.

Due to the inability to train together, the club's leadership has encouraged members to train independently since mid-August to maintain their health and improve performance. National athlete Pham Tien San, the club's chairman, has also joined in training with members.

Not only in Bac Giang but also in other provinces and cities, many individuals and groups are dedicated to training for the race.

This year's event features innovations and is expected to gather athletes nationwide for a half marathon. The competition aims to showcase and promote the image of Bac Giang’s land and people, contributing to boosting tourism.

Participants will explore new routes that pass through historical sites, architectural landmarks, and modern roads in the province, promising fresh experiences and positive impressions of Bac Giang’s beautiful land and hospitable residents.

The event will also provide opportunities for competition and interaction among athletes nationwide, with notable runners ever present at international tournaments like Nguyen Thi Oanh and Pham Tien San taking part.

According to Than Trung Kien, Secretary of the provincial Youth Union and deputy head of the Organising Committee, the union has instructed local youth organisations to connect with volunteers for arranging accommodations for participating runners.

They will also provide recommendations regarding tourist attractions and local specialties in Bac Giang, contributing to promoting the province's image and ensuring athletes will have meaningful experiences during their time in Bac Giang.
