In early morning, members of the association of the elderly of Lich Son village in formal costumes were ready for the worship ritual of the God of Agriculture and other gods.

The worship ritual shows respect and upholds the tradition of “when drinking water, remember its source” as well as the wishes of Vietnamese people in general and farmers in particular for a year of good weather, bumper harvests, and no natural disasters or epidemics.

Than Nong temple is located at the end of Huyen Dinh- Yen Tu mountain range, viewing Luc Nam river, which meets the demand for spiritual culture of farmers in the locality.

The solemn temple in Cam Ly commune was built on the antique traces along the side of Huyen Dinh mountain. Legend has it that Than Nong was the first person teaching people how to improve wide rice varieties to grow in the fields to feed human.

Than Nong temple has become one of the important historical relic sites in the sacred land of Tay Yen Tu, where is the place for religious and cultural activities of the locals and a destination for many visitors from the province and other localities. It has contributed to developing spiritual and cultural tourism of the locality.

After the worship ritual of the God of Agriculture and other gods, Chairman of the people’s committee of Luc Nam district Dang Van Nhan delivered his speech and beat the drum to open the festival. Then, the delegates offered incense at the temple and performed the rites for a new crop: sowing symbolic seeds and distributing seeds to leaders of communes and towns in the district.

Coming to the Than Nong temple festival, locals and tourists can experience a number of culture and art activities such as banh chung (square glutinous rice cake) and banh day (round glutinous rice cake) wrapping competitions, visiting OCOP booths showcasing a number of special agricultural products like honey, yellow-flower tea, taro, lychee and longan products and attending folk games.

The festival will take place from February 12 to 14 (the 15th to 17th day of the first lunar months).
