Unforgettable memories of two meetings with Uncle Ho

Updated: 09:54, 18/10/2023
BAC GIANG – When I was young, I had the honor of meeting President Ho Chi Minh (Uncle Ho) twice when he visited Bac Giang. Even though many years have passed, his images and teachings are still deeply imprinted on my mind.

It was April 6, 1961, the first time I saw Uncle Ho on stand A (now stand B) of the stadium of Bac Giang town (now Bac Giang city), in front of more than 20,000 soldiers and people. That year I was 17 years old, in 7th grade at Bac Giang town’s Secondary School No. 1.

That day, Uncle Ho wore simple brown clothes and rubber sandals. He extended warm greetings to his compatriots, especially the elderly, army officers and soldiers, police, militia and self-defense forces, factory workers, teenagers and children.

He thanked the Chinese experts who came to help build the Fertilizer Factory. He praised the province's achievements during the years of resistance war against the French colonialists and in building the homeland during the peace time.

While Uncle Ho was talking, it started to rain. He stopped and asked the provincial leaders to take the people to shelters. He added: "If you have any problems, just ask the provincial leaders and Nguyen Khai" (comrade Nguyen Khai, an alternative member of the Party Central Committee, accompanied Uncle Ho that day).

After the talk, Uncle Ho visited officials and people of Tan An commune, Yen Dung district. Uncle Ho's visit left deep impressions on me. His teachings are simple, easy to understand, and easy to do.

After more than two years, luck came to me again when I was a militiaman in Tan Tien commune, Yen Dung district, now in Bac Giang city. On October 17, 1963, also at Bac Giang town’s stadium, I met Uncle Ho for the second time when he visited my hometown (at that time Bac Giang and Bac Ninh were merged into Ha Bac province) and this was also the last time the leader visited Bac Giang.

Uncle Ho was still as simple as more than two years ago. He visited, encouraged, praised and reminded everyone to strive and build a strong province with a new position in an effort to build socialism in the North, contributing to the struggle for national reunification. After the talk with the local people, Uncle Ho attended the first Party Congress of Ha Bac province.

During my 40 years of work, I have had 28 years of being involved in Party building work. I often memorize Uncle Ho's teachings when he visited my homeland.

In any position, I have fulfilled my duties well, helping Bach Dang Hai Phong Shipyard to be twice awarded the title of Hero of the Armed Forces by the Party and State (1971 and 1995) and the title of Labour Hero in the reform period (2000). I myself was awarded the third-class Anti-American Resistance Medal and honoured many times by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee, the Ministry of Transport, the Hai Phong 350 Command, and the Hai Phong city People's Committee.

Retiring at the end of 2004, in January 2006, I was elected secretary of the Party cell of Residential Area No. 4, Lam Son ward and took on this task until September 2022. Performing the task in the new environment, always keeping in mind Uncle Ho's teachings, I, along with comrades in the Party Committee, helped the Party cell always complete its tasks well, among the top units of the Party Committee of Lam Son ward.
