Unique art of embroidery on bodhi leaves

Updated: 10:03, 15/05/2025

In Gia Sinh Commune, Gia Vien District, Ninh Binh Province, a land steeped in tradition where verdant mountains and crystal-clear waters blend with the sacred essence of the land, the Sinh Duoc Cooperative has been quietly nurturing distinctive cultural values alongside its production activities. Among these, the art of embroidery on bodhi leaves stands out as a uniquely captivating craft.

Bodhi leaf embroidery is a refined form of handicraft representing a harmonious blend of meticulous craftsmanship, Vietnamese cultural identity, and a desire to preserve traditional arts in the rhythm of modern life.

The embroidery process on bodhi leaves is both intricate and distinctive.

In Buddhist philosophy, the bodhi leaf symbolises enlightenment and peace.

Drawing inspiration from this spiritual emblem, the people of Gia Sinh breathe creativity into each delicate leaf, transforming it into a vivid piece of art infused with soul and heartfelt sentiment.

Creating a bodhi leaf embroidery artwork involves a meticulous and highly patient process. Each fresh bodhi leaf is carefully selected for its shape, size, and colour.

These leaves are then manually treated by soaking them in limewater for two months to remove the chlorophyll, leaving behind a delicate yet resilient leaf skeleton — the primary material for these exceptional works.

Some pieces incorporate thousands of these skeletal leaves, demanding a seamless blend of technical skill and aesthetic sensibility from the artisans.

Importantly, the cooperative frequently consults with artisans, painters, calligraphers, photographers, and experienced craftworkers to ensure a harmonious fusion of tradition and modernity, offering viewers the highest artistic value.

Building upon the foundation of traditional bodhi leaf mosaics, the cooperative has elevated the craft by introducing fine embroidery techniques on individual leaves.

The process still begins with selecting flawless leaf skeletons with elegant, slender stalks, followed by choosing a design concept, printing the template, and then patiently stitching each fine thread into place.

With skilled hands and steadfast dedication, the embroiderers bring to life iconic symbols of Vietnamese culture — lotus flowers, carp, pine trees, cranes, dragons, phoenixes, renowned landmarks, and historical milestones — rendered with vividness, sophistication, and emotional depth.

Speaking about the art of bodhi leaf embroidery, Vu Trung Duc, Head of the Sinh Duoc Cooperative, shared: “The cooperative has developed bodhi leaf embroidery into a four-star provincial One Commune One Product (OCOP) product, rich in both artistic and spiritual value. Our members have actively sought knowledge, from online research to attending training courses held by the provincial Department of Industry and Trade. It is this spirit of progress and passion for the craft that led to the development of embroidery on leaf skeletons — a fragile medium that demands high-level technique and persistent patience,” Trung Duc stated.

Each embroidered bodhi leaf artwork embodies a story deeply rooted in the culture and history of Ninh Binh and the Vietnamese nation as a whole.

Embroidery on these delicate leaf skeletons requires technical precision and unwavering perseverance.

It is a heartfelt tribute to love for one’s homeland and origins, and a poignant reminder to preserve traditional crafts in an era where industrialisation threatens to erode long-standing values.

More than just meaningful souvenirs, embroidered bodhi leaf artworks have become a cultural symbol of Ninh Binh. Alongside other traditional arts, they have helped generate stable employment for over 100 local workers.

Every embroidered piece reflects the artistry and inner beauty of the craftsperson and the traditional land from which it originates. In every stitch, one can sense the patience, devotion, and enduring love for the trade.

These artisans are not only crafting fine objects by hand — they are also weaving stories of the land, of faith, and of aspiration.

In each hand-embroidered bodhi leaf artwork, viewers can easily perceive a message that is both gentle and profound: Beauty is not necessarily in complexity or sophistication, but in the subtlety, dedication, and boundless love devoted to simplest things.
