Viet Nam–China rail freight boosts ASEAN–China trade exchange

Updated: 08:45, 12/07/2025

Freight transport via Viet Nam–China cross-border trains is bustling with impressive growth figures that have further driven trade exchanges between Viet Nam and China, as well as ASEAN countries in general.

According to the China Central Television (CCTV), in the first half of 2025, China–Viet Nam freight trains departing from Guangxi transported 18,870 containers, an increase of 283% year on year.

Export demand to Viet Nam in 2025 is very high, with a diverse and abundant range of goods, including generator components, automobile parts, plastic pellets, steel, and melamine powder, which were supplied from many provinces and cities across China such as Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shandong.

A representative from the Nanning Railway Logistics Centre stated that since the beginning of the year, China–Viet Nam freight trains departing from Guangxi have transported 2,528 containers of auto components and parts and 4,580 containers of industrial plywood, marking an increase of 100% and 398% respectively compared to the same period last year.

In response to the growing cross-border freight transport demand between the two countries, the Nanning Railway Bureau and Viet Nam’s railway sector have agreed to increase transport capacity.

Accordingly, in 2025, the weight capacity of freight trains has risen by approximately 30%, from 1,000 tonnes to 1,300 tonnes. Additionally, the frequency of freight trains is expected to nearly triple, from 5 trips per week to 14 trips per week.

As of the end of June 2025, 16 Chinese enterprises have been providing services for the China–Viet Nam freight trains. To date, more than 380 types of goods from 25 Chinese provinces and cities have been exported to ASEAN countries such as Viet Nam, Laos, and Thailand via the China–Viet Nam intermodal freight trains departing from Guangxi, contributing to the promotion of trade exchanges between ASEAN countries and China.
