Vietnam's Phu Quoc to build $360M metro line linking airport with APEC conference center

Updated: 16:10, 27/10/2025

Phu Quoc is set to build its first urban rail line, an 18-kilometer metro project designed for speeds of 70–100 kph and costing nearly VND9 trillion ($360 million), with construction expected to begin late this year and finish in 2027.

The An Giang Provincial People’s Council on Oct. 24 approved the project, which will be developed under a BOT (Build–Operate–Transfer) contract by Phu Quoc Sun Co., Ltd.

State funding will account for no more than 70% of the project cost (over VND6.2 trillion), with the remaining more than VND2.6 trillion contributed by the investor or project enterprise.

In its first phase, the metro line will connect Phu Quoc International Airport to the APEC Conference Center. The route will include 1.3 km of elevated track, 14.3 km at ground level, and a 2-km underground section passing through the central urban area.

The project will feature six stations and a maintenance facility. Trains will have 3 to 5 carriages, each over 34 meters long and capable of carrying around 180 passengers.

Construction is slated to run from the fourth quarter of 2025 to the second quarter of 2027, with the BOT contract to last up to 40 years from the date of handover and operation.

Authorities say the new metro line will support a modern public transport network for residents and tourists, while also serving the APEC Summit expected to take place in Phu Quoc in 2027.

It is also expected to help reduce congestion and emissions, and promote green urban development and sustainable tourism on the island through 2030.
