Violin village in the countryside
BAC NINH – Then village, now part of Tan Dinh Commune in Bac Ninh Province, is home to one of Vietnam’s most unusual cultural traditions, a rural “violin village.” For nearly 70 years, violin music has remained a part of daily life in this farming community of more than 1,700 residents, most of whom earn their living growing gladiolus flowers.
After long hours working in the fields, local farmers gather to practice and preserve violin music, passing the tradition from one generation to the next.
The shared passion for music has helped strengthen community bonds, encouraging solidarity and mutual support as residents work together to improve their lives.
Despite social and economic changes over the decades, the love of violin music in Then Village has endured, becoming a distinctive cultural hallmark of the Kinh Bac region in northern Vietnam.
