4 Vietnamese universities climb in global top 10% rankings

Updated: 16:55, 03/06/2026

Six Vietnamese universities have secured spots among the top 10% of institutions worldwide in the 2026 Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), and four of them have improved their global standing compared to last year.

Released on June 1, the latest rankings highlight Duy Tan University as the highest-placed Vietnamese institution. Duy Tan climbed 33 spots to rank within the top 4.4% of universities globally.

The strongest leap came from Hanoi Medical University, which surged 44 places to land at 1,835th worldwide.

Ton Duc Thang University and Hanoi University of Science and Technology also made positive strides, moving up by nine and 19 places, respectively.

However, the country's two national university systems experienced a downturn. Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City fell steeply by more than 90 places to 1,367th, while Vietnam National University, Hanoi saw a minor drop of three places to 1,219th.

At the pinnacle of the list, the global top five remained unchanged from the previous year.

Leading institutions from the United States and the United Kingdom continue to dominate, with Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, the University of Cambridge, and the University of Oxford taking the highest honors.

Headquartered in Saudi Arabia, the CWUR is a university ranking and consulting organization that has published global evaluations since 2012.

Originally launched as a project assessing only the world's top 100 universities, the ranking expanded rapidly due to strong international interest. It grew to include the top 1,000 institutions in 2014 and the top 2,000 by 2019.

For this year's edition, more than 21,200 higher education institutions were assessed to determine the final Global 2000 list.

This scope cements its place alongside QS, Times Higher Education (THE), and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) as one of the largest academic rankings globally.

The CWUR sets itself apart by not relying on surveys or data submitted by the universities themselves. Instead, it collects independent data to evaluate four key pillars.

Research performance carries the heaviest weight at 40%. This is assessed through metrics like the total number of research articles and those appearing in highly influential or frequently cited journals.

The quality of education and alumni employment each contribute 25% to the final score. These are measured by the academic and professional success of a university’s alumni relative to the institution's size.

The final 10% is determined by the quality of the faculty, specifically tracking the number of members who have received top academic distinctions.
