Nam Duong develops fruit cultivation linked to tourism
BAC NINH – With more than 1,800 hectares of agricultural land, of which fruit trees play a key role, Nam Duong commune of Bac Ninh province has strong advantages for developing large-scale commercial agriculture.
Alongside efforts to improve product quality and build brands for lychee and other fruit crops, the locality is gradually tapping the potential of agricultural tourism and community-based tourism associated with traditional craft villages.

Early-ripening lychees in Nam Duong commune are currently sold at high prices. |
These days, lychee-growing areas in Nam Duong are in peak harvest season. The joy of local farmers is further boosted as lychee prices continue to rise.
Early-ripening lychees are currently priced at around 75,000 VND (2.85 USD) per kg, up 15,000 VND per kg compared to the beginning of the season and 4–5 times higher than last year’s early-season crop.
In Ben Huyen village, Tran Van Bon recently sold more than 3 tonnes of early-ripening lychees, earning over 200 million VND (7,590 USD).
His family owns 2 hectares of lychee orchards, about 80% of which are early-ripening varieties such as U Hong and Thanh Ha hybrids.
“This year, households with productive orchards are making a big profit. We haven’t even reached the weighing point before traders have already come to buy along the road,” Bon shared.
For the whole season, his family is expected to harvest around 10 tonnes of fruit, earning nearly 700 million VND.
Nam Duong is one of the province’s key fruit-growing areas with more than 1,000 hectares of lychee, including 645 hectares of early-ripening lychee concentrated in villages such as Tan Moc, Hoa Quang, Tan Thanh, Tan Trung, Tan Dong, Dong Ia, Lam, Canh, Nam Dien, Bieng and Cau Meo. This is also a well-known early lychee production area of the former Luc Ngan region, widely recognised in the market.
In recent years, the locality has promoted safe production practices, improved product quality, and strengthened export capacity.
Currently, more than 1,020 hectares are cultivated under VietGAP standards, while around 30 hectares meet GlobalGAP standards.
Notably, 26 orchards covering about 120 hectares have been granted growing area codes, qualifying for export to the United States and Europe.
Beyond ensuring food safety, local farmers have also proactively improved varieties. Many households in Dong Quyt village have developed the U Trung lychee variety from the traditional U Hong strain.
This new variety produces larger fruit, thicker flesh, attractive colour, and better flavour, making it highly valued in the market.
Le Tuan Anh, Chairman of Nam Duong commune People’s Committee, said the locality is cooperating with the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection to develop the U Trung lychee variety into a concentrated production zone to increase economic value.
In 2026, despite unfavorable weather conditions, the commune’s total lychee output is still estimated to reach over 2,500 tonnes, including more than 2,000 tonnes of early-ripening lychee.
This provides an important foundation for Nam Duong to further leverage its strengths as a large-scale fruit production area.
Beyond the harvest season, Nam Duong is also entering its tourism period. According to the commune authorities, since the beginning of the lychee season, the locality has welcomed around 8,000 visitors to orchards for sightseeing and experiential tourism.
