Updated: 09:34, 14/12/2021
Pham Thi Hong Le broke the 10,000-m record at the national athletics championship Monday.

Le completed 10,000 m at Hanoi's My Dinh National Stadium in 34 minutes and 1.59 seconds. The previous record was 34 minutes and 8.54 seconds, established by Nguyen Thi Oanh at the national championship last year.

Pham Thi Hong Le competes in the 10,000 m run of the national athletics championship in Hanoi, December 13, 2021.

Oanh also registered for the 10,000-m run this year. However, she withdrew right before the race, leaving Le without a worthy opponent.

This is the first time in the history of Vietnamese athletics that the 10,000-meter record is broken at two consecutive national tournaments. In 2020, Oanh broke the record that Doan Nu Truc Van established 17 years ago. Last week, she broke the 18-year national record in the 5,000-m race, also established by Van.

Le is one of the stars of the Vietnamese national athletics team. At SEA Games 2019, after winning the bronze medal in the full marathon, she had a bad cramp and was taken into the emergency room. Two days later, she won the 10,000-meter silver.
