Thai highly evaluated this variety for its bumper crop, big fruit, thin peel, sweet taste and later ripen time than other one from 30 – 45 days, hence enjoying better price.
Thanks to the gained experiences, now his family has more than 100 late ripen longan trees, providing annual output of 6 – 7 tonnes of fruits. With current selling price on the market, this year crop will bring him more than 100 million VND (4,300 USD).
Similarly, Le Thai Vinh in Mai Chau village, An Duong commune (Tan Yen district) has revamped over 500 mixed longan trees by late ripen longan varieties such as Mien Thiet and Huong Chi for recent 6 years.
Though some tornadoes occurred at the flowering and fruit bearing stage, his longan productivity hits nearly 10 tonnes of fruits.
Surveying at Tan Yen district, one of the localities with biggest cultivation area of late ripen longan in the province with over 250ha, the district People’s Committee has focused on directing to grow this crop. Now, it becomes a popular plant as the economic development orientation for the locals in the communes of Phuc Hoa, Hop Duc, Lien Chung, An Duong...
To date, the province has revamped and developed some 800 ha of late ripen longan in various localities. Thanks to the favourable weather condition, not only longan but also other fruits in the province have high flowering and fruit bearing rates.
According to the statistic from the Division of Plant Production and Protection (DPPP) (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development), Bac Giang province has more than 3,200 ha of longan cultivation, mostly in the districts of Luc Nam, Luc Ngan, Tan Yen and Yen The.
To develop this crop, the competent agencies, localities and farmers have applied the advanced technology into production to firstly form the concentrated growing area, enhance the quality toward VietGAP standard. The province has grown nearly 1,000 ha of longan under VietGAP which give fruits with high quality and good appearance.
The actual situation proved that though the longan does not face big pressure in consumption like lychee and watermelon, most of the productivity is sold domestically. If the fruit is processed or exported, the farmers will be more comfortable in product consumption.
In the province, the longan buying is done mostly by the small traders without any establishment of cooperatives and processing businesses like other fruits. meanwhile, its growing area, quality and quantity are expanded day by day, causing difficulties to future selling.
According to Head of the DPPP Nguyen Tien Dung, the localities and farmers should early establish the production linkage chains together with area expansion following the plan of forming concentrated cultivation area under VietGAP, GlobalGAP standards toward a stable development and high economic value.
Due attention should be paid to building the cooperatives, working groups with close connection to the business in production and consumption while boosting up the introduction and trade promotion toward exporting the fruit.
