Updated: 17:51, 27/12/2024

BAC GIANG - With the close guidance from the Agriculture sector and localities, winter crop production in Bac Giang province this year has been going smoothly. Local farmers are now focusing on caring and harvesting the crops in all fields across the districts, township and city.

Remembering more than 3 months ago, dozens of hectares of crops in Hai Khe village, Que Nham commune (Tan Yen) were severely destroyed by storm No. 3. But now the whole field is covered in lush green of sweet corn, potatoes and tomatoes among others, many of which are ready for harvest.

Farmers in Chu Dien commune (Luc Nam) harvest winter kohlrabi.

This winter crop, Ha Thi Khanh's family in Hai Khe village planted 7 sao (old measuring unit, each sao equals to 360 square meters) of cherry tomatoes, sweet corn and potatoes.

At the time of planting, the family paid attention to following technical measures according to the instructions of the Agriculture sector together with spreading the crops to ease the cultivation and consumption. The plants all grow well.

Khanh shared excluding the cost of buying seeds and fertilizers, since the beginning of the season, her family has earned nearly 10 million VND (about 420 USD) from growing winter crops, while the harvest time (especially tomatoes) will last until February next year.

Not only Khanh's family, realizing the economic efficiency of winter crops, most farmers in Que Nham commune do not leave their land empty but focus on growing winter crops on large areas.

Therefore, during the harvest season, traders from near and far come to the commune to set up a weighing point to purchase agricultural products for consumption in provinces and cities across the country.

In other localities such as Chu Dien, Bao Dai (Luc Nam); My Thai, Tan Thanh (Lang Giang), people are also actively planting winter crops for high productivity and favorable consumption.

In the scallion growing area in Chu Dien commune, the average yield is 700-800 kg per sao. With average selling price of 10,000 VND per kg (both leave and root), farmers can earn a profit of 5-6 million VND per sao.

Farmers in Bac Giang province encountered many difficulties in this winter crop due to the severe impact of storm No. 3; the price of materials and production materials increased.

However, thanks to the timely guidance from the Agriculture sector and local authorities to convert part of the area to grow warm-loving plants (as planned from the beginning of the season) to grow cold-loving plants and expand the area in favorable localities.

According to statistics from the Division of Plant Production and Protection (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development), up to now, the whole province has planted 23,800 hectares of winter crops, an increase of 1,300 hectares compared to last year. The expanded area focuses on varieties with high yield, high quality and good resistance to pests and diseases.

The province expects the winter crop production to increase in value, partly compensate the damage caused by natural disasters to the agricultural sector and ensure food supply during the Lunar New Year.

In order to achieve high production efficiency, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development previously strengthened to guide people about intensive cultivation in accordance with the crop schedule and characteristics, allocated thousands of kilograms of quality seeds and hundreds of tonnes of fertilizers sponsored by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front and enterprises.

From the above support, local farmers planted about 530 hectares of potatoes, corn, and various vegetables and fertilized nearly 300 hectares of crops.

Currently, the entire winter crop area in the province is basically growing and developing well. Many vegetable areas have been harvested with high quality and are strongly consumed in traditional markets, restaurant systems and supermarkets.

To date, the localities have harvested more than 5,100 hectares of winter crops, reaching 38% of the plan. The total winter crop production value is estimated at 1.9 to 2 trillion VND ( more than 1.8 trillion VND in 2023).

According to the Agriculture sector, one of the advantages in winter crop production this year is the promotion of linkage activities. Most of the concentrated production fields in the province have contracts to consume products with favorable output.
