Updated: 15:30, 09/12/2019
(BGO) - On December 7, a working delegation of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism led by Vu Duong Thuy Nga, Director of the ministry’s Library Department, had a fact-finding tour of Bac Giang province to evaluate the 2- year of implementation of a project to develop reading culture in the community until 2020, with orientation toward 2030 in Bac Giang province.

Implementing the project, over the past 2 years, the movement of reading books and newspapers in the province has been strengthened and developed, attracting a large number of cadres and people.

The Bac Giang provincial Library has done well the work of distributing books to the grassroots level, contributing to forming reading habit and improving people's knowledge and spiritual life. It has well performed the task of calling on agencies and businesses to donate books.

According to statistics, the province has 57 communal libraries, 570 bookcases in villages and residential areas, 10 district and city libraries, and 1 private library. There are about 133,000 books in the Bac Giang provincial Library and 114,000 books in district libraries.

Over the past two years, the Bac Giang provincial Library and district and city libraries have served nearly 280,000 readers, while issuing and renewing 13,000 reader cards.

Besides the achieved results, the implementation of the project has faced many difficulties such as limited capital for library activities and asynchronous district-level library system. There was no funding for operation of communal libraries, which are mostly based in the cultural houses or the halls of the communal People’s Committees, with poor equipment.

At the working session, the leader of the Library Department appreciated the attention of the Party committees, authorities and competent agencies as well as the efforts of the library system from the provincial to grassroots level in implementing the project.

The Library Department asked competent authorities to coordinate more closely with localities, agencies and units to promote information and communication activities to raise public awareness of the importance of reading culture; while investing in upgrading facilities and providing financial support for the operation of libraries at the grassroots level.

It is necessary to form and develop an electronic library system, regularly renovate operational forms and improve the quality of serving readers in libraries, while collaborating with the educational sector to implement mobile library models in schools and mobilizing all resources for the development of reading culture...

During the working agenda, the delegation surveyed the situation of reading culture development at the Song Khe Community Library (Bac Giang city); and the expected construction of a library in Tien Dung commune (Yen Dung district).
