She was 75 days old and weighed 4kg (the lightest and youngest baby undergoing surgery at the hospital since 2015). Bao Anh suffered from congenital ventricular septal defect (The one who twins with Bao Anh has normal health).

This was one of the high technologies under the Satellite Hospital Project successfully transferred by the Vietnam National Hospital of Paediatrics to the Bac Giang Obstetrics and Paediatrics Hospital.

The group of doctors who performed the case included Nguyen Minh Cuong, head of the Voluntary Medical Services Department; Pham Dang Binh, deputy head of the Surgery Department; and Nguyen Van Tra, deputy head of the Anesthesia and Resuscitation Department, together with nurses and technicians.

Doctor Nguyen Minh Cuong, head of the Voluntary Medical Services Department and chief of the operation team, said that ventricular septal defect is a defect creating a hole in the wall that separates the two lower chambers (ventricles) of the heart. This is the most common congenital heart disease, accounting for about 20-25 percent of congenital heart diseases.

Babies with this disease often have coughing, wheezing, and unusual breathing (fast breathing, the chest in a concave appearance when sniffing). They suck slowly or are unable to stop sucking, and often sweat, with their lips, tongue and fingers becoming mauve. They face shortness of breath in case of exertion.

Pregnant mothers should go for prenatal and postpartum screenings for early detection, follow-up and surgery when indicated. With early intervention, 98 percent of patients with congenital heart diseases can be cured and return to life as normal people.
