Bac Ninh becomes a new growth hub after the merger

Updated: 07:47, 22/02/2026

BAC NINH- Bac Ninh province will welcome the first spring, the New Year of the Horse 2026 after the merger. The strong combination of the two most dynamic growth poles in northern Vietnam is expected to open a new growth driver for the capital region and the northern delta.

During over 2 decades, former Bac Ninh and Bac Giang provinces were the highlights of the nation in investment attraction and economic restructuring.

The former Bac Ninh province was known as the “capital of electronic industry”, a destination for many multi-national corporations like Samsung, Canon, Foxconn and Goertek while the former Bac Giang province also attracted a large number of big foreign direct investment (FDI) projects such as Hana Micron, Luxshare-ICT, JA Solar and other investors in renewable energy, electronics and solar power.

Thanks to its advantages of land fund, traffic infrastructure and abundant labour force, Bac Giang was among the leading localities nationwide in GRDP growth rate and FDI attraction in the period of 2020-2024.

Bac Giang was evaluated a “star” in Vietnam’s industrial map by many experts. In line with industrial development, Bac Giang is home to a fertile agricultural production region, which is famous for Luc Ngan lychee, the national trademark and many other specialties like Yen The chicken and Chu rice noodle.

The presence of giant corporations and sustainable development strategies opened up new opportunities for regional-scale service and commercial development.

Meanwhile, Bac Ninh affirmed its position as a cutting-edge industrial hub, the “core area” in the global electronic production chain, the nest of hundreds of FDI enterprises and thousands of supporting industry companies.

The rapid urbanization, complete infrastructure, favourable investment climate and high-quality human resources had been distinctive advantages of the province for years.

Since 1 July 2025, former Bac Ninh and Bac Giang were merged into the new Bac Ninh province. Athouth the 2 provinces had different features, they supplemented each other like two sides of a single development flow, one is modern technology and urban development foundation while the other is the space for industrial expansion, commodity agriculture and green energy.

The merger helps to connect the economic space, infrastructure and supply chain, establishing an interlinked industrial–service–logistics belt.

Especially, the commencement of Gia Binh international airport project with the total investment of 196 trillion VND (7.5 billion USD) is a breakthrough in infrastructure development, which not only opens an airway for Bac Ninh but also creates a strategic safe connecting axis for the northern midland and delta region.

This infrastructure chain helps to narrow the regional distance, reduce logistics costs and widen space for multi-center investment attraction, where every industrial park, urban and agricultural area can support and supplement each other.

The combination among technology and governance, processing industry, energy and high-quality agriculture has changed the whole province into a “great industrial park and great urban area” in northern region, which is both large in scale and deep in development.

Bac Ninh has a population of over 3.6 million, a land area of more than 4,700 square kilometres and GRDP valued at some 25 billion USD after the merger.

Remarkably, the growth quality is transferring from production expansion to innovation, green industry and digital economy-based development.

Three strategic breakthroughs are shaping: (i) building the new Bac Ninh into a high-tech industrial and logistics hub of the capital region; (ii) developing smart cities, digital infrastructure, modern services and international trade; (iii) establishing centers for R&D, innovation, and technology start-ups, particularly in the areas of Yen Phong, Gia Binh, Que Vo, and Viet Yen.

Once the centers for research, production, distribution, and consumption appear, Bac Ninh will have all necessary conditions to emerge as a new growth driver in northern Vietnam, a national “pole of industry, high technology, and smart services”.
