Bac Ninh: Transport connectivity serves as lever for development
BAC NINH - Recognising that transport infrastructure must lead the way for development, Bac Ninh has in recent years focused on investing in a series of modern roads and bridges linking it with neighbouring localities. These projects have improved mobility, gradually synchronised infrastructure, strengthened regional connectivity, and expanded development space.
One of the most notable projects is the road connecting National Highway 37 and National Highway 17 to Vo Nhai district in Thai Nguyen province, completed in 2025.

The main route stretches over 40 km, with feeder roads passing through several communes in the former Viet Yen township, and Tan Yen and Yen The districts.
Many sections have been widened, cutting across hills and mountains. Upon completion, the project brought great excitement to local residents.
Earlier, Hoa Son Bridge spanning the Cau River was also completed, shortening travel time between Bac Ninh and key industrial zones in Thai Nguyen.
In addition, Bac Ninh has approved a project to build a road connecting Ring Road 5 of the Hanoi Capital Region (section through Thai Nguyen) and Provincial Road 294 in Bac Ninh, with a total investment of over 51 billion VND (1.94 million USD).
According to the provincial Transport and Agriculture Project Management Board No. 1, preparations are underway, with construction expected to begin in June.
Once completed, the project will enhance regional connectivity between northwestern Bac Ninh and southeastern Thai Nguyen, facilitating economic cooperation and cultural exchange, and meeting residents’ travel needs.
According to Nguyen Viet Hung, Director of the provincial Department of Construction, during the 2025–2030 period, Bac Ninh plans to develop or upgrade four additional routes connecting with Thai Nguyen.
These include the Ring Road 5 section through Bac Ninh (51.3 km), upgrades to sections of National Highway 37, and a 6.5-km flood-control dyke road linking the former Thai Son commune to Phu Binh, Thai Nguyen province.
To further strengthen regional linkages, Bac Ninh is also investing in routes connecting to Hanoi, border gates in Lang Son, Quang Ninh, and Hai Phong - the country’s most dynamic economic hubs.
Key projects include Ring Road 4 of the Hanoi Capital Region, upgrades to Provincial Road 291 linking Bac Ninh and Quang Ninh, and Dong Viet and Kenh Vang Bridges connecting Bac Ninh with Hai Phong.

A transport project is under construction to connect Thai Nguyen with Bac Ninh’s road network. |
In its development strategy, Bac Ninh places strong emphasis on regional cooperation. Recently, Bac Ninh, Thai Nguyen, and Phu Tho signed a cooperation agreement based on five pillars.
A key focus is promoting coordination in the implementation of strategic transport infrastructure projects, accelerating connectivity projects, completing planning schemes for highways, national and provincial roads, railways, and linking industrial parks, logistics centres, and tourism areas.
Alongside road and waterway infrastructure, the province is also paying attention to rail and air transport. A major highlight is the Gia Binh International Airport project, which is being fast-tracked with the goal of commencing operations in time to serve APEC 2027.
This project is expected to play a crucial role in creating a new growth pole east of Hanoi and meeting the rising air transport demand of the northern key economic region.
