Bac Ninh expands VietGAP aquaculture area

Updated: 16:14, 18/12/2025

BAC NINH - In recent years, to effectively tap the potential of water resources and provide safe food to consumers, the provincial agriculture and environment sector, along with local authorities, have focused on supporting and encouraging aquaculture households to apply farming procedures under VietGAP standards.

With 0.8 hectares of water surface for traditional fish farming (including tilapia, carp, grass carp, and common carp), in 2024, the family of Nguyen Van Thuy in Gia village, Tan Dinh commune was selected by the provincial Livestock, Veterinary, and Fisheries Sub-department to participate in the project for developing automated aquaculture according to VietGAP standards.

Nguyen Van Da from Tan Chi commune checks the weight of fish farmed under VietGAP standards to adjust the feed accordingly.

Since switching to VietGAP fish farming, the productivity has increased by approximately 20%. In the first farming season, the family harvested nearly 18 tonnes of fish, an increase of almost 3 tonnes compared to previous seasons.

After receiving guidance and support from the sub-department, Phu Tho Aquaculture Cooperative in Lam Thao commune currently has 32 member households applying VietGAP-based fish farming practices.

In recent years, thanks to the implementation of policies that provide support for infrastructure, seedling production, training, and technology transfer, the awareness of aquaculture farmers about applying VietGAP standards has changed and VietGAP farming has even become a movement in some areas.

According to statistics from the agriculture and environment sector, the province currently has 312 hectares of aquaculture applying VietGAP standards, an increase of 100 hectares compared to 2024.

According to Nguyen Hong Quang, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, VietGAP-compliant aquaculture is the comprehensive application of procedures from water environment management, seedling production, feed, chemicals to harvesting and post-harvest handling.

This method helps to enhance productivity and quality, and expands the market for products. VietGAP-based aquaculture ensures safe products and traceability, facilitates product sale, and increases production value.

At the same time, it changes people's awareness of safe farming techniques according to regulations, ensuring sustainability in freshwater aquaculture.

To continue developing VietGAP-based aquaculture and create a widespread, voluntary movement among farming households, in the future, the agriculture and environment sector will focus on organising production and aquaculture in alignment with market demand, leveraging the advantages of each region.

Special attention will be given to organising production in safe food chains in intensive fish farming areas and cage aquaculture on rivers to reduce production costs, protect the environment, and enhance productivity and product value.

They will also strengthen training and support for farmers involved in aquaculture production under VietGAP standards.

Furthermore, the sector will intensify inspection and control over facilities producing and trading fingerlings, aquatic feed, biological products, and environmental treatments, ensuring the supply of high-quality aquatic seeds and feed.

The continuous application and transfer of scientific technological advances in processing, preservation, and post-harvest handling will also be promoted.
