Bac Ninh recognises Nam Hong Royal Museum as provincial tourist site

Updated: 11:29, 10/03/2026

BAC NINH - Authorities in northern Bac Ninh province have officially recognised the Nam Hong Royal Museum as a provincial-level tourist destination, highlighting its role in preserving and showcasing valuable historical artefacts.

The decision was recently issued by the Bac Ninh Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism for the museum located at 225 Tran Phu Street in Tu Son Ward.

The Nam Hong Royal Museum is arranged into four themed exhibition spaces.

The museum houses the national treasures “Hoang de chi bao” (Treasure of the Emperor) golden seal and a Dong Son bronze jar, both considered significant artefacts of Vietnamese history.

The Nam Hong Royal Museum was established on December 28, 2017 under a decision by the Bac Ninh People’s Committee. It operates as a non-public cultural institution under provincial management and is supervised by the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The national treasure – the golden seal “Hoang de chi bao” (Treasure of the Emperor) – is preserved in a bulletproof glass display case at the Nam Hong Royal Museum.

The museum conducts scientific research, archaeological excavation, collection and preservation of artefacts, while also organising exhibitions and educational activities to promote historical and cultural values.

It also offers consultancy, training and appraisal services related to museum operations.

Founded by collector and businessman Nguyen The Hong, the museum represents more than two decades of effort to gather rare artefacts from across Vietnam and abroad.

Its collection now includes nearly 3,000 objects ranging from bronze and ceramic artefacts associated with the Dong Son, Sa Huynh and Champa cultures to items from feudal dynasties of Vietnam, China and Japan.

Veterans listen to a presentation introducing the national treasure - the Dong Son bronze jar.

Among the most notable exhibits is a Dong Son bronze jar dating back roughly 2,300 years, recognised as a national treasure by the prime minister in January 2023. The artefact is considered unique because it remains intact with both lid and body preserved.

A decorative band depicting animals moving counterclockwise, an uncommon motif among hundreds of similar jars discovered in Vietnam, adds to its rarity.

The museum also displays the gold imperial seal “Hoang de chi bao,” cast in 1823 during the reign of Emperor Minh Mang of the Nguyen dynasty. The square seal measures about 13.8 by 13.7 cm, stands 10.4 cm high and weighs 10.78 kg. It was historically used in major royal decrees and state affairs.

The seal holds particular historical significance as it was handed over by Emperor Bao Dai to the revolutionary government on August 30, 1945, symbolising the end of Vietnam’s feudal monarchy.

After more than 70 years overseas, it was repatriated from France in November 2023 by Nguyen The Hong and is now displayed at the museum. It was officially recognised as a national treasure in December 2024.

The museum currently features four themed exhibition spaces displaying imperial artefacts, Asian and European ceramics, commissioned porcelain from the Le-Trinh and Nguyen periods, and collections of bronze and ceramic objects spanning from the Dong Son culture to later Vietnamese dynasties.

Provincial officials said the recognition of the Nam Hong Royal Museum as a tourist site highlights the role of private cultural institutions in preserving heritage while enriching Bac Ninh’s cultural tourism offerings and attracting visitors from home and abroad.
