Boxer Nguyen Van Duong, Vietnam’s golden hope at SEA Games 33

Updated: 14:59, 21/10/2025

BAC NINH- Martial artist Nguyen Van Duong (born in 1996 in Hoang Van commune) is unrivaled in 57kg boxing event at domestic arenas. During 15 years of professional competitions, he has brought Bac Ninh and national sports many outstanding achievements. He is Vietnam’s golden hope at the upcoming 33rd SEA Games.

Nguyen Van Duong had great passion for martial art movies and practiced taekwondo at school when he was young. When he was 13, Duong asked his parents to allow him to go to Hanoi to learn boxing with his cousin in the people’s public security team.

Nguyen Van Duong once steps into the ring and wins the game.

“I was only 32 kilos at that time. At first the coach refused me because he saw me too small, but he allowed me to practice for 2 months during the summer vacation to improve my health. Then, he realized my ability and determination, and he decided to keep me in the team”, told Nguyen Van Duong.

Duong won a gold medal in the 13–14-year-old category at the first time he attended the national youth championship in 2010.

2 years later, Duong received continuous failures. Felling discouraged because of poor results, he decided to go home but he returned to the team after a short time to continue his passion for martial arts.

3 months later, Nguyen Van Duong competed at the national youth championship and bagged a bronze medal. This achievement helped him become more confident and determined to continue pursuing boxing.

The year 2019 marked a turning point in Nguyen Van Duong’s career when he decided to join Bac Ninh boxing team. The province’s sport was receiving strong investment at that time, targeting high achievements, regional and international arenas, of which boxing was one of the key sports.

Nguyen Van Duong bagged one gold medal at the national boxing championship in 57kg category right in the first year wearing Bac Ninh’s jersey. He had stood on the top podium for 6 consecutive years (from2019 to 2024) at this tournament since then.

Particularly, he continued claiming the first position in 57kg category at the domestic tournaments with a gold medal at the 2022 National Sports Festival.

Nguyen Van Duong also had many excellent performances at different international tournaments. He became a phenomenon of Vietnam’s boxing when he knocked out Thai boxing legend Chatchai Decha Butdee in the men’s featherweight (52-57kg) category in the quarterfinals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic boxing qualifying tournament in Asia-Pacific region.

This victory helped him become the first Vietnamese boxer securing an Olympic slot after more than 32 years. He also made history at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic when he won 3-2 over the Azerbaijani martial artist Tayfur Aliyev in 52-57kg category.

“Duong is a talented boxer. He competes in the 57kg category in which many excellent martial artists are fighting for the championship. However, with his talent, passion and great efforts, Duong has defeated all of them to affirm his position as the Vietnam’s number one boxer in recent years”, said Nguyen An Phu, Director of the Center for Sports Training and Competition No 2.

His slim physique gives Nguyen Van Duong an advantage, allowing him to move swiftly and deliver fast punches. Besides, his exceptional punching power makes him a “rare talent” in Vietnamese boxing. With his aggressive, powerful and fast attacking style as well as strong punches, Duong defeated opponents by convincing knockouts.

Although he is unbeatable in Vietnam and he even knocked out tough boxers at continental tournaments, Nguyen Van Duong has not yet stood on the top podium at SEA Games for many reasons. That has always weighed on Duong’s mind.

He has practiced hard to improve his shortage and preserve his good performance at domestic tournaments. In the list of Vietnamese boxing team to compete at SEA Games 33 taking place this December, Duong is still the biggest hope in men’s 57kg category. He is ready to come back with a goal to win the SEA Games gold medal in Thailand.
